Sandra Ozuna, one of the Greater Kansas City area women recognized in March by Dos Mundos in observance of Women’s History Month, strives to a strike a balance between two cultures.
On the one hand, Ozuna is involved with area culture through her profession. Possessing a background in business administration, specializing in marketing and management, she has carved out a career as an executive, managing international sales for syndication at the Kansas City, Missouri-based company Andrews McMeel Universal.
Away from her job, however, Ozuna has dedicated more than a decade to volunteering with the Colombian Cultural Association, an area-based organization. Originally from Bogota, she left Colombia in 2000 for the United States, seeking better opportunities and the chance to learn the English language.
Ozuna’s involvement with the association began through family connections, she recalled. Her deep appreciation for Colombian culture drove her to play a pivotal role in revitalizing the organization, she said. Along with some friends, she re-established the association to share and raise awareness of Colombian culture, traditions and social responsibility in Kansas and Missouri.
It was important to have a woman’s perspective in revitalizing the organization, according to Ozuna.
“Women look at things with a different perspective,” Ozuna said. ”We are more focused on the human side. Like most women, I have the ability to do several things at the same time and I give special importance to details, which has allowed me to significantly minimize risks when executing events. A good leader must be committed to the cause, know how to work in a team, make decisions and solve problems when they arise, and especially must have empathy and good communication with his or her team.”
Under Ozuna’s influence, the association shifted its focus from primarily social events to a broader range of community and cultural involvement. Initiatives include a scholarship program for college students, charitable programs like Backpacks for Christmas, fundraising for bereaved families and facilitating consular services. The association also promotes cultural exchange by inviting Colombian artists to appear in the area and collaborating with other communities, as seen by its participation in the 2023 Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri.
“It’s my firm belief that we have a social responsibility and that we should always be motivated by love for others and for the cause we represent,” Ozuna said. “So the members of the board of directors could not stop getting involved in social causes, which is a fundamental part of living in a community. The focus of the association is, in part, to socialize and integrate Colombians; but more importantly, we have a commitment to the community to create more cultural, educational and philanthropic events.”
Ozuna’s work has inspired the establishment of other cultural associations. She takes pride in serving as a catalyst for change and a source of motivation for women from other communities. Specifically, “it is very gratifying for me to see that women from other communities are motivated and see us as an example,” she said.
“We always do things with passion, dedication and a lot of effort and try to contribute so that, in one way or another, other people can learn, grow and succeed,” Ozuna said. “This brings me deep satisfaction. Receiving words of encouragement and sincere recognition helps us and motivates us to continue moving forward.”
Ozuna envisions further growth and innovation for the association, with new programs, continued successful events and ongoing social initiatives, she said.
Reflecting on her life overall, Ozuna is proud of herself for leaving her comfort zone and pursuing a new life in the United States. Her faith and resilience have guided her through her challenges, shaping her into the woman she has become, she said.
Ozuna’s dreams include continuing to grow, creating a foundation to help those in need and giving back to the community, she said.
To other Latin women aspiring to make a difference, Ozuna offers this advice:
“Never be intimidated by anyone. Study. Prepare yourselves. Surround yourselves with people who are on the same wavelength and who will push you to improve. Participate more actively in your communities. Spread your culture. Preserve and share your traditions, but integrate yourselves with the American culture. Be grateful and be an active part of the community by giving back.
“Life is a constant learning process. Take risks and enjoy the journey. Work on your weaknesses and turn them into strengths. Make every obstacle a challenge worth overcoming. Never give up because it is O.K. to fall. What is not O.K. is to stay down!”
Sandra Ozuna balancea sus deberes profesionales con el servicio voluntario
Sandra Ozuna, una de las mujeres del área metropolitana de Kansas City reconocidas en marzo por Dos Mundos en conme-moración del Mes de la Historia de la Mujer, se esfuerza por encontrar un equilibrio entre dos culturas.
Por un lado, Ozuna está involucrada con la cultura del área a través de su profesión. Poseedora de una formación en administración de empresas, especializada en marketing y gestión, ha forjado una carrera como ejecutiva, gestionando ventas internacionales para sindicación en la empresa con sede en Kansas City, Missouri, Andrews McMeel Universal.
Sin embargo, fuera de su trabajo, Ozuna ha dedicado más de una década al voluntariado con la Asociación Cultural Colombiana, una organización con base en el área. Originaria de Bogotá, dejó Colombia en 2000 para ir a Estados Unidos, buscando mejores oportunidades y la posibilidad de aprender el idioma inglés.
La participación de Ozuna en la asociación comenzó a través de conexiones familiares, recordó. Su profunda apreciación por la cultura colombiana la llevó a desempeñar un papel fundamental en la revitalización de la organización, dijo. Junto con algunos amigos, reestableció la asociación para compartir y crear conciencia sobre la cultura, tradiciones y responsabilidad social colombianas en Kansas y Missouri.
Fue importante tener la perspectiva de una mujer en la revitalización de la organización, según Ozuna.
“Las mujeres miramos las cosas con una perspectiva diferente”, dijo Ozuna. “Estamos más enfocadas en el lado humano. Como la mayoría de las mujeres, tengo la capacidad de hacer varias cosas al mismo tiempo y doy especial importancia a los detalles, lo que me ha permitido minimizar significativamente los riesgos al ejecutar eventos. Un buen líder debe estar comprometido con la causa, saber trabajar en equipo, tomar decisiones y resolver problemas cuando surjan, y especialmente debe tener empatía y buena comunicación con su equipo”.
Bajo la influencia de Ozuna, la asociación cambió su enfoque de eventos principalmente sociales a una gama más amplia de participación comunitaria y cultural. Las iniciativas incluyen un programa de becas para estudiantes universitarios, programas benéficos como Backpacks for Christmas, recaudación de fondos para familias en duelo y facilitación de servicios consulares. La asociación también promueve el intercambio cultural invitando a artistas colombianos a aparecer en el área y colaborando con otras comunidades, como se vio en su participación en la celebración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana 2023 en el Museo de Arte Nelson-Atkins en Kansas City, Missouri.
“Es mi firme creencia que tenemos una responsabilidad social y que siempre debemos estar motivados por el amor hacia los demás y por la causa que representamos”, dijo Ozuna. “Por lo tanto, los miembros de la junta directiva no podían dejar de involucrarse en causas sociales, lo cual es una parte fundamental de vivir en una comunidad. El enfoque de la asociación es, en parte, socializar e integrar a los colombianos; pero más importante aún, tenemos un compromiso con la comunidad para crear más eventos culturales, educativos y filantrópicos”.
El trabajo de Ozuna ha inspirado la creación de otras asociaciones culturales. Se enorgullece de servir como catalizadora de cambio y fuente de motivación para mujeres de otras comunidades. Específicamente, “es muy gratificante para mí ver que mujeres de otras comunidades se motivan y nos ven como un ejemplo”, dijo.
“Siempre hacemos las cosas con pasión, dedicación y mucho esfuerzo e intentamos contribuir para que, de una manera u otra, otras personas puedan aprender, crecer y tener éxito”, dijo Ozuna. “Esto me brinda una profunda satisfacción. Recibir palabras de aliento y reconocimiento sincero nos ayuda y nos motiva a seguir adelante”.
Ozuna vislumbra un mayor crecimiento e innovación para la asociación, con nuevos programas, eventos exitosos continuos e iniciativas sociales en curso.
Reflexionando sobre su vida en general, Ozuna está orgullosa de sí misma por haber salido de su zona de confort y haber perseguido una nueva vida en Estados Unidos. Ella indicó que su fe y resiliencia la han guiado a través de sus desafíos, moldeándola en la mujer que se ha convertido.
Los sueños de Ozuna incluyen continuar creciendo, crear una fundación para ayudar a los necesitados y devolver a la comunidad.
A otras mujeres latinas que aspiran a marcar la diferencia, Ozuna ofrece este consejo:
“Nunca se dejen intimidar por nadie. Estudien. Prepárense. Rodéense de personas que estén en la misma sintonía y que las empujen a mejorar. Participen activamente en sus comunidades. Difundan su cultura. Preserven y compartan sus tradiciones, pero intégrense con la cultura estadounidense. Sean agradecidas y sean parte activa de la comunidad devolviendo.”
“La vida es un proceso de aprendizaje constante. Asuman riesgos y disfruten del viaje. Trabajen en sus debilidades y conviértanlas en fortalezas. Hagan de cada obstáculo un desafío digno de superar. Nunca se rindan porque está bien caer. ¡Lo que no está bien es quedarse abajo!”
