Kansas City coach Andy Reid and his Chiefs are in the AFC title game again.
The Chiefs (16-2) will play Buffalo (15-4) this Sunday (Jan. 26) at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, with the winner to play the NFC champion Feb. 9 in New Orleans in the Super Bowl, the NFL’s annual championship game. Kansas City defeated Houston 23-14 Jan. 18 at Arrowhead and Buffalo defeated Baltimore 27-25 Sunday (Jan. 19) to secure the showdown.
Bills quarterback Josh Allen expressed his respect for the Chiefs after Buffalo’s win over Baltimore.
“We know what they are. … They’re the perennial (example) of what you want to be in the NFL,” Allen told CBS Sports sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson.
Kansas City is making its eighth appearance in an AFC title game and seventh straight. The Chiefs are seeking their third straight AFC championship and fifth in six seasons.
“Here we sit with a championship game. … We’re humbled to be in that position,” Reid told reporters after the win over Houston. “And fortunate. … We appreciate that we’re right here at Arrowhead.”
Veteran defensive lineman Chris Jones is among those players who’ll be with Reid at Arrowhead. It’ll be his seventh straight appearance in an AFC title game.
When asked by a reporter how it felt to play in his first AFC title game in January 2019 and how it helped him appreciate his latest opportunity to play for the Lamar Hunt Trophy, Jones replied that each journey to a championship game is unique, yet the goal hasn’t changed.
“We still want to bring that Lamar Hunt Trophy back home,” he said.
The Chiefs will have to avenge a regular-season loss to collect another Lamar Hunt Trophy. Buffalo defeated Kansas City 30-21 Nov. 17, 2024, at Highmark Stadium.
It’ll be the seventh time Kansas City and Buffalo have met in the postseason, dating back to January 1967, when both teams were in the AFL (the AFL merged with the NFL, and the AFC and NFC were created in 1970). The Chiefs won the AFL title game 31-7 to secure their spot in the first Super Bowl. The Bills then won the next two postseason meetings. Kansas City has won three straight, including a 27-24 thriller in January 2024 in the second round of the AFC playoffs.
The Bills are seeking their fifth AFC title overall and first in 30-plus years. Coincidentally, the opponent they defeated in January 1994 for that championship was Kansas City.
