Kansas City coach Andy Reid and his Chiefs seek to do something no NFL franchise has done: win three Super Bowls in a row.
The Chiefs will have the chance to secure their “threepeat” Sunday (Feb. 9), when they’ll face Philadelphia in Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. With information provided by multiple sources, here’s a look at this year’s version of the NFL’s annual title game:
*Teams: Philadelphia Eagles (17-3, home, NFC champion); Kansas City Chiefs (17-2, visitor, AFC champion)
*Super Bowl journey: The Chiefs won their first nine regular-season games – seven of them by seven points or less. Their first loss came Nov. 17, 2024, on the road against Buffalo.
They then went 6-1 down the stretch. The stretch included a Dec. 8 home win over the Los Angeles Chargers, which clinched their ninth straight AFC West Division title. It also included a 29-10 Christmas Day road win over Pittsburgh that clinched the top seed and homefield advantage for the AFC playoffs.
Kansas City finished the regular season Jan. 5 with a 38-0 road loss to Denver. The Chiefs rested their offensive and defensive starters that day.
The Chiefs then won the AFC title with two playoff wins at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. First, they downed Houston 23-14 Jan. 14. Then, they edged Buffalo 32-29 Jan. 26.
With their three-point victory over the Bills, the Chiefs won their third straight AFC title and fifth in six seasons. Their win over Buffalo, along with the win over Houston, also stirred up debates among sports commentators – and football fans in general – over whether or not they had received preferential treatment from officiating crews.
After a 2-2 start, the Eagles won 14 of their last 15 regular-season games to clinch the NFC East title – their 13th overall and second in three seasons. In finishing the regular season 14-3, they clinched the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs.
Philadelphia claimed the NFC title with wins over Green Bay, the Los Angeles Rams and Washington – all at home. In drubbing Washington 55-23 Jan. 26, the Eagles set an NFL record for most points scored by one team in a conference title game.
The 32-point rout of the Commanders also gave Philadelphia its fifth NFC title overall and second in three seasons.
*Super Bowl/NFL championship history: This marks the second time Kansas City and Philadelphia have faced off in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit to edge the Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII. A field goal by Harrison Butker with seconds left helped Kansas City win it.
Kansas City is making its seventh Super Bowl appearance and fifth since its original league, the AFL, merged with the NFL. Before the merger in 1970, the Chiefs represented the AFL in two Super Bowls, falling to Green Bay in Super Bowl I and defeating Minnesota in Super Bowl IV.
The Chiefs won their first post-merger Super Bowl in February 2020 by rallying to defeat San Francisco in Super Bowl LIV. They were then pounded by Tampa Bay in Super Bowl LV. After their comeback win over Philadelphia in Super Bowl LVII, they rallied to defeat San Francisco 25-22 in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII – the second Super Bowl to go to overtime.
By winning back-to-back Super Bowls, Kansas City became the first team since New England to win two straight Super Bowls. The Patriots accomplished the feat by edging Carolina in Super Bowl XXXVIII and the Eagles (then coached by Reid) in Super Bowl XXXIX
Before the Super Bowl era, the franchise also won the AFL title in 1962, when it was called the Dallas Texans – one season before relocating and being rebranded the Kansas City Chiefs.
Philadelphia is making its fifth Super Bowl appearance. The Eagles’ first appearance was in Super Bowl XV, when they lost to the then-Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders. After falling to New England in Super Bowl XXXIX, they defeated New England 41-33 in Super Bowl LII, then lost to Kansas City in the Super Bowl LVII thriller.
The Eagles are seeking their fourth NFL title overall. Before the Super Bowl era, they were league champions in 1948, 1949 and 1960.
