Women’s History Month honoree juggles multiple roles

For Zury Martinez, Women’s History Month provides a reminder of the opportunities available to women and recognizes the multiple roles women fill.
“We juggle so many roles as daughters, mothers, wives and leaders; and each accomplishment, big or small, is worth celebrating,” Martinez said.
Martinez, one of the women being honored by Dos Mundos in observance of March as Women’s History Month, can list graduating college among her accomplishments. A native of Oaxaca, Mexico, who lives in Olathe, Kansas, she holds degrees from Stanford University (Cohort 10) and The Wharton School.
Another accomplishment is becoming a business executive. Martinez is the second-generation CEO of Nick’s Cleaning Services Inc., a family-owned business based in Johnson County, Kansas.
“What I enjoy most about my role is the opportunity to help people, even when it doesn’t involve the services we offer,” she said.
Martinez enjoys something else about her job: her colleagues.
“Leading my team to success and ensuring we are on the right path is something that truly inspires me every day,” she said.
Martinez hadn’t planned on taking over the family business, she said.
“But with the unwavering support of my family and husband, I realized I was more than capable,” Martinez added.
In addition to her role as a CEO, Martinez serves on the board of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City, co-chairs Café con Empresarias Latinas and is a committee member for the Nuestra Latina Awards. Martinez also mentors young entrepreneurs. Recently, she worked with high school students at KC BizFest.
When asked about her achievements, however, Martinez lists her family as her greatest one.
“We are a household of entrepreneurs, where my kids are constantly surrounded by discussions of endless possibilities and the belief that our success is only limited by our own ambitions,” she said.
Martinez credits her ambition to her roots.
“My heritage shapes who I am and drives me to break barriers and push forward with resilience,” she said.
Martinez’s greatest inspiration comes from her mother, who started the family business and is her role model.
“I witnessed her sacrifices, determination and hunger for a better life,” she said. “There was nothing that could stand in the way of her pursuit of the American dream.”
In observance of Women’s History Month, Martinez advises other Latinas to keep moving forward, as she has done.
“With faith and determination, there is nothing we can’t overcome,” she said. “Every small step takes you closer to your bigger goals. Love yourself, embrace your journey and take responsibility when needed. Trust in your strength and know that each challenge is an opportunity to grow.”

Para Zury Martínez, el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer es un recordatorio de las oportunidades disponibles para las mujeres y reconoce los múltiples roles que desempeñan las mujeres.
“Hacemos malabarismos con tantos roles como hijas, madres, esposas y líderes; y cada logro, grande o pequeño, vale la pena celebrar”, dijo.
Martínez, una de las mujeres homenajeadas por Dos Mundos en conmemoración de marzo como el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer, puede incluir el haberse graduado de la universidad entre sus logros. Originaria de Oaxaca, México, que vive en Olathe, Kansas, tiene títulos de la Universidad de Stanford (Cohorte 10) y de The Wharton School.
Otro logro es convertirse en ejecutiva de negocios. Martínez es la directora ejecutiva de segunda generación de Nick’s Cleaning Services Inc., una empresa familiar con sede en el condado de Johnson, Kansas.
“Lo que más disfruto de mi función es la oportunidad de ayudar a las personas, incluso cuando no involucra los servicios que ofrecemos”, dijo.
Martínez disfruta de algo más de su trabajo: sus colegas.
“Liderar a mi equipo hacia el éxito y asegurarnos de que vamos por el buen camino es algo que realmente me inspira cada día”, dijo.
Martínez no tenía pensado hacerse cargo del negocio familiar, comentó.
“Pero con el apoyo incondicional de mi familia y mi esposo, me di cuenta de que era más que capaz”, añadió.
Además de su rol como directora ejecutiva, Martínez forma parte de la junta directiva de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana del Gran Kansas City, copreside el Café con Empresarias Latinas y es miembro del comité de los Premios Nuestra Latina. También es mentora de jóvenes emprendedoras. Recientemente, trabajó con estudiantes de secundaria en el KC BizFest.
Sin embargo, cuando se le pregunta sobre sus logros, Martínez menciona a su familia como el más importante.
“Somos una familia de emprendedores, donde mis hijos están constantemente rodeados de conversaciones sobre infinitas posibilidades y la convicción de que nuestro éxito solo está limitado por nuestras propias ambiciones”, dijo.
Martínez atribuye su ambición a sus raíces.
“Mi herencia forma quién soy y me impulsa a romper barreras y seguir adelante con resiliencia”, dijo.
Su más grande inspiración proviene de su madre, quien inició el negocio familiar y es su modelo a seguir.
“Fui testigo de sus sacrificios, determinación y hambre por una vida mejor”, dijo. “No había nada que pudiera interponerse en su camino hacia el sueño americano”.
En conmemoración del Mes de la Historia de la Mujer, Martínez aconseja a otras latinas que sigan avanzando, como ella lo ha hecho.
“Con fe y determinación, no hay nada que no podamos superar”, dijo. “Cada pequeño paso te acerca a tus metas más grandes. Ámate a ti misma, acepta tu viaje y asume la responsabilidad cuando sea necesario. Confía en tu fuerza y sabe que cada desafío es una oportunidad para crecer”.
