Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools (KCKPS) have started a new school year — and with it, the district has made some changes.
One change was launching its virtual welcome center, a one-stop for parents to find all information about KCKPS and resources for their students, said Superintendent Dr. Anna Stubblefield.
“The goal is for this to be the first stop for parents to go and get information, if they don’t necessarily have it available or (know) where to go,” Stubblefield said. “This would be the place for them to go to get the information.”
The webpage, accessible by visiting the KCKPS official website, will have information ranging from international transfers transactions to nutrition and transportation information, along with referrals for other community services and resources.
The other change was starting a dual language program. Three elementary schools have started a dual language program for kindergarteners: Silver City, New Stanley and Frances Willard. The dual language program “offers students the opportunity to become biliterate in Spanish and English by learning language through the content,” according to the district’s website.
“Students that are a part of this program, they spent half their day learning in Spanish and the other one learning in English,” Stubblefield explained.
There are still a few openings available for the 2023-24 school year, she said. The goal is to expand this program a grade per year, Stubblefield said.
In other district news, more information about the master plan approved by the school board for district facilities is expected to be released. In addition, the district plans to stage Families Advocacy Days, in which parents can communicate with staff members.
Stubblefield said the district is looking forward to the school year and encourages parents to get involved and communicate with the staff.
“Our theme is ‘Better Every Day,’ so we’re always looking for opportunities where we can get better. So we want families to reach out to us because we want to be partners in the educational process for their students,” she said. “So we look forward to our families connecting with us and to their students having a great year.”

KCKPS da la bienvenida al nuevo año escolar con dos cambios
Las Escuelas Públicas de Kansas City, Kansas (KCKPS, por sus siglas en inglés) comenzó el nuevo año escolar, y con él, el distrito ha hecho algunos cambios.
Un cambio fue el lanzamiento de su centro de bienvenida virtual, un lugar único para que los padres encuentren toda la información sobre KCKPS y recursos para sus estudiantes, dijo la superintendente Dra. Anna Stubblefield.
“El objetivo es que esta sea la primera parada para que los padres vayan a buscar información, si no necesariamente la tienen disponible o (no saben) adónde ir”, dijo. “Este sería el lugar al que acudirían para obtener la información”.
La página web, a la que se puede acceder visitando el sitio web oficial de KCKPS, tendrá información que abarca desde transacciones de transferencias internacionales hasta información sobre nutrición y transporte, junto con referencias a otros servicios y recursos comunitarios.
El otro gran cambio fue el inicio del programa de lenguaje dual. Tres escuelas primarias han iniciado un programa de lenguaje dual para niños de jardín de infantes: Silver City, New Stanley y Frances Willard. El programa de lenguaje dual “ofrece a los estudiantes la oportunidad de aprender a leer y escribir en español e inglés al aprender el idioma a través del contenido”, según el sitio web del distrito.
“Los estudiantes que forman parte de este programa pasarán la mitad del día aprendiendo en español y la otra mitad en inglés”, explicó Stubblefield.
Todavía hay algunas vacantes disponibles para el año escolar 2023-24, dijo. El objetivo es ampliar este programa un grado más cada año, dijo Stubblefield.
En otras noticias del distrito, se espera que se publique más información sobre el plan maestro aprobado por la junta escolar para las instalaciones del distrito. Además, el distrito planea organizar Días de Defensa de las Familias, en los que los padres pueden comunicarse con los miembros del personal.
Stubblefield dijo que el distrito espera con ansias el año escolar y alienta a los padres a involucrarse y comunicarse con el personal.
“Nuestro lema es ‘Mejor cada día’, por lo que siempre estamos buscando oportunidades en las que podamos mejorar. Por eso queremos que las familias se acerquen a nosotros porque queremos ser socios en el proceso educativo de sus estudiantes”, dijo. “Por eso esperamos que nuestras familias se conecten con nosotros y que sus estudiantes tengan un gran año”.
