De acuerdo con un reciente comunicado de prensa del Pew Research Center, el número de venezolanos que han pedido asilo a Estados Unidos ha aumentado un 168 por ciento durante el último año.
“Venezuela está ahora entre los principales países con solicitantes pidiendo asilo a Estados Unidos, con 10,221 solicitudes que han sido entregadas entre octubre del 2015 y junio del 2016”, declaraba el comunicado.
La falta de servicios básicos, entre ellos comida y electricidad, ha forzado a los venezolanos a buscar asilo en Estados Unidos y en otros países. Para recibir asilo en Estados Unidos, los solicitantes deben estar buscando protección debido a que hayan sufrido persecución o temor a que sufrirán persecución debido a su raza, religión, nacionalidad, membresía a un grupo social particular u opinión pública. La elegibilidad se basa si se cumplen los requisitos anteriores.
“Soy de Venezuela y vivo en Estados Unidos. Me siento terrible debido a la situación en la que está mi país”, dijo Liliana González, una venezolana que reside en Estados Unidos. “Espero que las personas que están solicitando asilo a Estados Unidos se les otorgue”.

According to a recent press release from the Pew Research Center, the number of Venezuelans requesting asylum in the United States has increased by 168 percent over the past year.
“Venezuela is now among the top nations of origin for asylum applicants to the United States, accounting for 10,221 applications filed between October 2015 and June 2016,” the release stated.
A lack of basic services, including food and electricity, has forced Venezuelans to seek asylum in the United States and elsewhere. To receive asylum in the United States, applicants must seek protection because they’ve suffered persecution or fear they’ll suffer persecution because of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion. Eligibility is based upon fulfilling the previous requirements. There is no fee to apply for asylum.
“I’m from Venezuela and I live in the United States. I feel terrible because of the situation that my country is in,” said Liliana Gonzalez, a Venezuelan residing in the United States. “I hope that people who are requesting asylum in the United States are granted … it.”
