Homemade pipe bombs targeting former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, CNN and others were intercepted Tuesday (Oct. 23) night and Wednesday (Oct. 24) morning.
The devices, which officials said shared a similar design, were aimed at prominent Democrats and a cable news network often criticized by political conservatives. The targets have all figured prominently in conservative political attacks – many of which have been led by President Trump.
A similar device was also found Monday (Oct. 22) at the New York compound of liberal billionaire George Soros.
All devices were intercepted before harming anyone.
On Wednesday afternoon, Trump addressed the attempted bombings.
“Acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America,” he said to reporters.
The attempted terror attacks prompted bipartisan condemnation and set off a feeling of uneasiness across the country.
The first inkling that the packages were connected came Wednesday morning when the Secret Service revealed that it had “intercepted two suspicious packages addressed to Secret Service protectees,” meaning Clinton and Obama. Shortly after the announcement, CNN offices in New York were evacuated after a similar device was discovered.
Similar packages were also sent to Democrat Rep. Maxine Waters of California, and the district office of Florida congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz in Florida. Authorities are still investigating the attacks.
