FG by Butker gives KC win in OT

Harrison Butker came through for Kansas City again Sunday (Sept. 20).

That night, the veteran placekicker and his fellow Chiefs were knotted with Indianapolis at 30 when Kansas City called timeout with 1 second left in overtime to give Butker the chance to boot the game-winning field goal. Butker, nicknamed “Butt Kicker” by Kansas City coach Andy Reid, responded by placing a 40-yarder between the uprights of the goal post to give the Chiefs a 33-30 victory at Arrowhead Stadium.

“It was great to have ‘Butt’  make that last field goal,” Reid said Monday (Sept. 21) during a televised and streamed press conference. “He’s done that so many times for us, we kind of take it for granted, but (it’s) not an easy thing to do and he sure jumped up there and did it with a lot of confidence.”

For Butker, who’s in his 10th season with the Chiefs, the kick takes its place in a pro football career that includes the game-winning field goal in Super Bowl LVII and clutch field goals in AFC playoff games. Focus was key to kicking the latest game-winner, Butker told the press.

“You’ve just got to be locked in, and that’s kind of what I decided at the end of the fourth quarter and through overtime,” he said to the reporters gathered around his locker. “You can’t really just relax on the bench; you’ve got to be locked in the whole time. And as a kicker, so much of it is just mental.”

Overall, the locked-in kicker made four field goals and attempted five Sunday. He made a 46-yarder during the first quarter, then missed a 51-yarder during the second quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Butker made a 28-yarder to put Kansas City up 27-20. The Colts (0-2) answered by staging a 13-play, 64-yard scoring drive, capped by Jonathan Taylor’s 5-yard TD run and Spencer Shrader’s extra-point kick, to make it 27-27.

Butker’s 31-yard field goal made it 30-27 Kansas City with  5:09 left in overtime. Shrader’s 38-yard field goal knotted it at 30, setting the stage for Butker’s final kick.

During a postgame press conference, a reporter asked Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones for his thoughts about Butker rebounding from missing the second-quarter field goal by winning it in overtime. Jones responded by saying the press had criticized Butker last season, prompting Jones to give “two middle fingers to you all.” He also said he trusted Butker and considered him the best placekicker in the NFL, Kansas City’s parent league.

“I’m going to continue to support my kicker,” Jones told reporters. “Listen, nobody is perfect. Even though we want ‘Butt’ to make them all, sometimes, you’re not (going to) and it’s just the cycle of life.”

Butker might be called on to make field goals again this Sunday, when the Chiefs (2-0) face Miami at Hard Rock Stadium. The Dolphins (0-2) are coming off a 35-13 drubbing by San Francisco.
