El mundo diverso de la cultura hispana

Diversidad

The diverse world of Hispanic culture
Commentary by Chara
National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) is a month to show Hispanic pride and value Hispanic culture.
Actually, Hispanic culture is formed by many cultures. In fact, Hispanic culture is one of the country’s most diverse cultures. Have you ever wondered how many cultures are part of it? Cultures from Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean are part of it. All of them have unique characteristics – and yet, they share some traits that help give Hispanic culture in the United States its identity.
One of those traits is the emphasis on family. Involving the family in important life decisions is part of Hispanic culture.
Another important characteristic is the respect Hispanic children show their parents. For Hispanics, parents are some of the most important people in their life and they’ll do anything to help them. Although many Hispanic families operate under the old-school model of leaving the decision-making and power to the father, the family leadership model is changing with the times.
Yet another important trait is respect for language. In many families, that means continuing to speak Spanish. And in many families, that also means speaking English – the most commonly spoken language in the United States. There are many Hispanic families with bilingual children. For them, English is as important as Spanish at home.
By combining pieces of Latin America and the United States, Hispanic culture has evolved into an incredible, vital mix of cultures and traditions. And U.S. society is richer for it, because that mix has helped produce prominent Hispanics who are making a difference in their respective communities, as we Americans are reminded each year when we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.
