En un sábado por la tarde de febrero de 1991, María Téllez Marble fue invitada a ir a una cita con un vecino.
Esa tarde, conoció a la persona con la que se casaría aquel diciembre – y celebraría sus bodas de plata 25 años más tarde.
“Fue amor a primera vista – … (de) los dos extremos”, recordó recientemente. “Él se acuerda de lo que llevaba puesto.”
“Una minifalda y una blusa blanca,” respondió su esposo Wayne Marble.
Una semana después de salir por primera vez, Wayne envió flores a María y han estado juntos desde ese Día de San Valentín (Feb. 14), 1991.
Wayne y María tienen tres hijos y cuatro nietos. El es profesor en la Escuela Secundaria de Lee Summit West. Ella es propietaria de un salón de belleza. Juntos, tienen un gimnasio Jiu Jitsu, donde dan clases todas las tardes.
“Tenía tres hijos cuando lo conocí a él,” dijo María. “Cuando nos conocimos, él sabía que tenía hijos – y todavía quería estar conmigo. Él siempre ha estado allí. Ya no hay muchos hombres así. Desde entonces, mis hijos lo llaman ‘papá’ “.
Al igual que en otras parejas, Wayne y María tienen sus diferencias, pero esas diferencias no son obstáculos que impiden el crecimiento de su amor, dijo Wayne. Los intereses comunes que comparten incluyen viajar y pasar tiempo con sus nietos. A través del deporte que practican pudieron visitar Río de Janeiro, según Wayne.
“No tenemos casi nada en común”, dijo María. “Me gusta el (equipo de fútbol) Chargers de San Diego, a el le gustan los Chiefs de Kansas City …. Me gustan los frijoles, a él le gusta el espagueti …. Pero lo hacemos casi todo juntos. Nos gusta viajar”.
Para mantener vivo su amor, Wayne dijo que le gusta “cantarle a” ella. Recientemente, la sorprendió durante el concurso de talentos de su escuela con flores y cantando la canción que le había cantado a ella en su boda.
“Me sorprendió”, dijo María. “Fuimos a comer – y en nuestro camino de regreso, se dirigió a la escuela. Me dijo que los estudiantes iban a hacer algo, así que teníamos que ir. Cuando llegamos, él se fue al baño. Pero luego, lo vi en el escenario con una foto de nosotros y con flores.”
Como un hombre felizmente casado, Wayne incita a las parejas jóvenes a nunca darse por vencido, respetar y comunicarse entre sí. Hay muchas dificultades en el camino del matrimonio, pero lo más importante es hablar con la otra persona, dijo.
“Usted tiene que centrarse en lo positivo”, dijo Wayne.
Wayne y María dijeron que esperan tener otros 25 años juntos. Para ayudar a celebrar los primeros 25, van a pasar este Día de San Valentín (domingo) con sus hijos y nietos. También están planeando en tener una cena juntos como pareja en Cheesecake Factory.

Couple celebrating 25th Valentine’s Day together

On a Saturday afternoon in February 1991, Maria Tellez Marble was invited to go on a double date with a neighbor.
That afternoon, she met the person she would marry that December – and celebrate her silver wedding anniversary with 25 years later.
“It was love at first sight – … (on) both ends,” she recalled recently. “He even remembers what I was wearing.”
“A miniskirt and a white blouse,” answered her husband, Wayne Marble.
A week after dating for the first time, Wayne sent Maria flowers. They’ve been together ever since Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14), 1991.
Wayne and Maria have three children and four grandchildren. He teaches at Lee’s Summit West High School. She owns a hair salon. Together, they have a jiu jitsu gym, where he teaches classes every afternoon.
“I had three kids when I met him,” Maria said. “When we met, he knew I had kids – and he still wanted to be with me. He has always been there. There are not that many men like that. Now, my kids call him ‘Dad.’ ”
As with other couples, Wayne and Maria have their differences, but those differences aren’t obstacles that keep their love from growing, Wayne said. The common interests they share include traveling and spending time with their grandchildren. Through the sport they practice, they’ve visited Rio de Janeiro, according to Wayne.
“We have almost nothing in common,” Maria said. “I like the San Diego Chargers (football team), he likes the Kansas City Chiefs…. I like beans, he likes spaghetti…. But we do almost everything together. We like to travel.”
To keep their love alive, Wayne said he likes to “sing to” Maria. Recently, he surprised her during his school’s talent show with flowers and by singing the song he had sung to her at their wedding.
“I was surprised,” Maria said. “We went to eat – and on our way back, he was driving to the school. He said he said that the students were going to do something, so we went. When we arrived, he kept going to the bathroom. But then, I saw him on the stage with a picture of us and flowers.”
As a happily married man, Wayne encourages young couples to never give up, and to respect and communicate with each other. There are many difficulties on the road of marriage, but the most important thing is to talk to the other person, he said.
“You have to focus on the positive,” Wayne said.
Wayne and Maria said they hope to have another 25 years together. To help celebrate the first 25, they’re spending this Valentine’s Day (Sunday) with their children and grandchildren. They’re also having a dinner together as a couple at the Cheesecake Factory.
