La comunidad de inmigrantes demuestran poder en Wisconsin
La comunidad de inmigrantes ha demostrado una vez más su organización.
El 18 de febrero, 20.000 personas marcharon desde distintas partes del estado de Wisconsin a su capital en Madison para protestar dos proyectos de ley que consideran ser “anti-inmigrantes.” Los organizadores del evento alentaron a dejar la escuela y sus trabajos por un día para demostrar a las personas y a los negocios lo que sería “un día sin latinos.”
El primer controversial proyecto siendo protestados es el proyecto 450 de la asamblea, conocido como el “Sanctuary Cities Bill.” Al ser aprobado, le permitiría a la policía investigar el estado migratorio de una persona y detenerla y hasta podría procesar la deportación de un indocumentado. El proyecto ya aprobado por la asamblea, es ahora tratado por el Sanado Estatal.
El segundo proyecto, proyecto 533 del Senado, prohibiría a las comunidades emitir una tarjeta de identificación a aquellas personas que carezcan una identificación estatal.
Aquellos a favor de los proyectos aclaman que esto garantizaría mayor seguridad en sus comunidades y prevendría el fraude electoral. Pero los que se oponen creen que estos proyectos crearían miedo y aumentarían los problemas de discriminación.
Los que están a favor de estos proyectos deberían reconsiderarlo. Los inmigrantes son una parte vital de la economía de Wisconsin. El 40% de los empleados en la industria lechera son inmigrantes. La comunidad de inmigrante tiene mucho poder por este simple hecho.
Es un gran momento para la comunidad de inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos. Nosotros, los inmigrantes, tenemos el poder – y debemos usarlo para garantizar igualdad.

Immigrant community displays power in Wisconsin

The immigration community has shown its organizational skills once again.
On Feb. 18, about 20,000 people marched from parts of Wisconsin to the state capital in Madison to protest two controversial state bills they claim are “anti-immigrant.” The organizing groups encouraged the protestors to leave work or school to show people and businesses what “A day without Latinos” looks like.
One controversial bill that was protested was Assembly Bill 450, known as the “Sanctuary Cities Bill.” If passed, the bill would allow the police to investigate people’s immigration status, and detain and possibly deport the undocumented. Already approved by the Assembly, it’s being considered by the state Senate.
The second bill, Senate Bill 533, would block counties statewide from issuing ID cards to people who cannot get state IDs. Passed by both legislative chambers, the legislation is awaiting Gov. Scott Walker’s signature to become law.
Supporters of both bills claim that they’ll make communities safer and prevent voter fraud. But the opponents of both bills criticize them for promoting racial profiling and creating fear.
Those who support the legislation should reconsider. Immigrants are a key group in Wisconsin’s economy. Of the hired workers on dairy farms, 40 percent are immigrants, according to a University of Wisconsin study. This simple fact gives the immigrant community great power.
It’s a historic time for immigration in the United States. We immigrants have the power – and we’ll use it to secure equality for all of us. And we’ll use our organizational skills to help us exercise that power, just as we did in Wisconsin.
