Chicos de azul buscan revancha por derrota en playoff, reclaman Copa MLS
Sporting Kansas City quizás tenga una motivación extra esta temporada por querer ganar su primera Copa MLS desde el 2013: la derrota de la temporada pasada en la primera ronda de los playoffs contra Portland.
“Tuvimos un objetivo el año pasado -y … era ganar la Copa MLS”, dijo el mediocampista brasileño Paulo Nagamura durante una entrevista el 3 de marzo en el Dia de los Medios en No Other Pub en Kansas City, Mo. “Y quedar fuera tan pronto -y la manera en que lo hicimos (quedar fuera) -duele”.
El mediocampista Jordi Quintanilla, quien se unió a Sporting pocos meses antes de esa derrota que terminó la temporada, coincidió.
“Espero con ansias… ir a Portland y… ganarle” dijo Quintanilla, originario de España. “Seguramente, será una de las mejores victorias si lo hacemos”.
Durante la temporada regular, los chicos de azul tendrán dos oportunidades para desquitarse de su derrota ante Portland. El 31 de julio, recibirán a los Timbers en Children´s Mercy Paark en Kansas City, Kansas. El 7 de agosto se enfrentarán a los campeones de la Copa MLS de nuevo en Providence Park, el lugar de la derrota el 29 de octubre del 2015 que aún persigue a Nagamura y Quintanilla.
Algunos fans del soccer quizás piensen que la jugada de ataque de Dom Dwyer será la clave para que Sporting pueda desquitarse con los Timbers – y progresivamente reclamar la Copa MLS. Después de todo, el delantero inglés de 25 años de edad lideró a Sporting con los tiros tomados, tiros a la portería y goles con 96, 40 y 12, respectivamente. Pero el director Peter Vermes les aseguró a los reporteros durante el evento del Día de los Medios del equipo que Sporting cuenta con muchas oportunidades para anotar.
Dwyer asintió. Los mediocampistas Brad Davis y Graham Zusi pueden terminar desde los extremos, dijo él. Los otros goleadores potenciales del club incluyen a Quintanilla, y al mediocampista y originario de Honduras Roger Espinoza, de acuerdo con Dwyer.
“Tenemos un equipo peligroso… los chicos pueden tirar desde una distancia. Esperemos, que vean los goles esparcidos este año”.
Un ataque balanceado quizás no sea el único punto fuerte de Sporting, de acuerdo con Nagamura, los chicos de azul tienen una química de equipo “bastante buena”. Además, tienen experiencia jugando juntos, ya que el club ha mantenido a gran parte de los jugadores de la temporada pasada, dijo él.
“Tenemos varios jugadores de calidad, así que pienso que la química solamente se va a mejorar durante la temporada”, declaró Nagamura. “Y definitivamente vamos a tener un equipo fuerte para disputar más trofeos este año”.

Boys in blue looking avenge playoff loss, reclaim MLS Cup

Sporting Kansas City might have extra motivation this season for wanting to win its first MLS Cup since 2013: last season’s first-round playoff loss to Portland.
“We had an objective last year – (and) that … (was) to win the MLS Cup,” Brazilian-born midfield Paulo Nagamura said during a March 3 Media Day interview at No Other Pub in Kansas City, Mo. “And to get out that early – and the way that we did (go out) – it hurts.”
Midfielder Jordi Quintilla, who joined Sporting a few months before that season-ending defeat, agreed.
“I’m looking forward to … (going to) Portland and … (beating) them,” said Quintilla, a native Spaniard. “For sure, it’ll be one of the best wins (for us) if we do so.”
During the regular season, the boys in blue will have two chances to avenge their loss to Portland. On July 31, they’ll host the Timbers at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan. On Aug. 7, they’ll face the defending MLS Cup champions again at Providence Park – the site of the Oct. 29, 2015, playoff defeat that still haunts Nagamura and Quintilla.
Some soccer fans might think that Dom Dwyer’s play on offense will be the key to Sporting getting revenge on the Timbers – and to eventually reclaiming the MLS Cup. After all, the 25-year-old English forward led Sporting in shots taken, shots on goal and goals with 96, 40 and 12, respectively. But manager Peter Vermes assured reporters during the team’s Media Day event that Sporting has plenty of scoring threats.
Dwyer agreed. Midfielders Brad Davis and Graham Zusi can finish from the wings, he said. The club’s other potential scorers include Quintilla, and midfielder and Honduran native Roger Espinoza, according to Dwyer.
“We have a dangerous group…. Guys can shoot from (a) distance,” he said. “Hopefully, you’ll see the goals spread out this year.”
A balanced attack might not be Sporting’s only strength. According to Nagamura, the boys in blue have “pretty good” team chemistry. In addition, they have experience playing together, as the club has retained much of last season’s roster, he said.
“We have some quality players, so I think the chemistry only is going to get better throughout the season,” Nagamura stated. “And we definitely (are) going to have a strong group to challenge for more trophies this year.”
Sporting began its quest of adding to its trophy case by defeating the Seattle Sounders FC 1-0 on Sunday (March 6) at CenturyLink Field (see related story).
