El número de muertes por el reciente terremoto de 7.8 grados que afectó al Ecuador continúa aumentando.
Hasta el momento de este artículo, el número de muertes era de 654 personas, con miles de heridos. El gobierno ecuatoriano también dijo que 58 personas permanecen sin localizarse, y más de 25,000 víctimas permanecen en refugios.
“Estos han sido días tristes para el país”, dijo el presidente ecuatoriano Rafael Correa a NBC News. “El país está en crisis”.
Según se informa el gobierno está tratando de ayudar a las víctimas dándoles comida y agua.
Se calcula que el daño en Ecuador a las propiedades es de $3,000 millones de dólares. Varios reportes noticiosos han declarado que están destruidos más de 7,000 edificios. El presidente Correa anunció recientemente por la televisión ecuatoriana que habría nuevas medidas financieras para atender los daños.
Para ayudar a reconstruir el país sudamericano, el presidente Correa anunció que habría un aumento en los impuestos de ventas en Ecuador por un año y que venderían bienes del gobierno. Además, se ha reportado que los residentes que tienen bienes de más de $1 millón de dólares contribuirán con un .9% de su riqueza,. “Reconstruir las áreas afectadas tomará de años y costará millones de dólares”, le dijo Correa a CNN . “Los costos de corto plazo son significativos”.
Desde el terremoto, el gobierno ecuatoriano ha reportado que han habido más de 700 terremotos secundarios. Los ecuatorianos temen más a estos, y las consecuencias que pueden traer.
“Lo único a lo que le tememos es a los terremotos secundarios”, citó a un hombre herido el periódico El Comercio.

Death toll in Ecuador following earthquake increases

The death toll from the recent 7.8 earthquake that hit Ecuador continues to increase.
As of this writing, the death toll was at 654 people, with thousands more injured. The Ecuadorian government also has said that 58 people remain missing, with more than 25,000 victims staying in relief shelters.
“These have been sad days for the homeland,” Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa told NBC News. “The country is in crisis.”
The government is reportedly trying to assist victims by supplying them with food and water.
Ecuador’s estimated property damage is $3 billion. Several news reports have stated that more than 7,000 buildings have been destroyed. President Correa announced recently on Ecuadorian television there would be new financial measures to address the damage.
To help rebuild the South American country, Correa announced there would be an increase in Ecuador’s sales tax for a year and that government assets would be sold. Moreover, residents with assets of more than $1 million will contribute .9 percent of their wealth, it has been reported. In addition, the news agency Reuters reported that Ecuador might issue new bonds on the international market.
“Rebuilding the affected areas will take years and cost millions of dollars,” Correa told CNN. “The short-term costs are significant.”
Since the earthquake, the Ecuadorian government has reported there have been more than 700 aftershocks. Ecuadorians fear more aftershocks – and the consequences they might bring.
“The only thing we fear is the aftershock,” an injured man was quoted by the newspaper El Comercio as saying.
