Gail Goeke, abogada de inmigración en McCrummen Law Group en North Kansas City, Missouri, dijo que ella y su equipo de abogados están trabajando con varios clientes y todavía están aceptando clientes que quieren convertirse en ciudadanos a tiempo para votar en noviembre.
“No hay fecha límite para solicitar la ciudadanía”, dijo Goeke. “Pero si votar en las elecciones de este año es importante para usted, debe presentar su solicitud a finales de junio.”
Goeke dijo que los residentes legales son elegibles para aplicar si han mantenido su estatus de residente permanente legal por cinco años – o durante tres años, si estaban casados con un ciudadano de EE.UU. durante tres años después de obtener la residencia legal.
Para prepararse para el proceso de naturalización, Goeke alienta a los solicitantes a ponerse en contacto con un abogado de inmigración tan pronto como sea posible, y poner juntos los pasaportes y otros documentos de viaje para analizar. USCIS accepting naturalization applications before end of June

Legal residents who want to vote in November in the U.S. presidential election still have time to apply for citizenship.
Gail Goeke, an immigration attorney at the McCrummen Immigration Law Group in North Kansas City, Mo., said she and her team of lawyers are working with several clients and still accepting clients who want to become citizens in time to vote this November.
“There is no deadline to apply for citizenship,” Goeke said. “But if voting during this year’s elections is important for you, you should submit your application by the end of June.”
Goeke said legal residents are eligible to apply if they’ve maintained their lawful permanent resident status for five years – or for three years, if they were married to a U.S. citizen for the entire three years.
To prepare for the naturalization process, Goeke encourages applicants to contact an immigration lawyer as soon as possible, and put together passports and other travel documents to analyze. Moreover, if the applicant has any past criminal history or any contact with the law, it’s important to bring any documents for the immigration lawyer to review before starting the application process.
From her experience of working with various applicants, Goeke has found that having citizenship status grants recipients other advantages that are exclusive to citizens, including civic activities such as jury duty and petitioning for permanent residence for certain family members.
“Many times, people who become U.S. citizens felt that this was their country for a very long time, and this was a way that officially upheld those feelings,” she said.
