Para los cristianos, observando la Cuaresma significa preparándose para el sacrificio final de Jesucristo haciendo sus propios sacrificios.
La observación de 40 días de Cuaresma comienza con el Miércoles de Ceniza. Los cristianos comienzan la preparación hacia la Pascua, asistiendo a la Misa y recibiendo la marca de ceniza en sus frentes. La ceniza viene de las ramas de palma que fueron bendecidas el año anterior en el Domingo de Ramos. Esta tradición recuerda a los cristianos a reflexionar sobre sus vidas actuales, arrepentirse y practicar disciplina espiritual.
Durante los 40 días, un cristiano renuncia un alimento o hábito que es de gran importancia para él o ella. Muchos cristianos mayores de 14 años también se abstienen de comer carne desde el Miércoles de Ceniza a todos los viernes durante la Cuaresma para representar los 40 días que Jesús ayunó en el desierto.
En esencia, la Cuaresma es una prueba para que los individuos intenten comprender los sacrificios que Jesús hizo y descubrir su propia moral. Según Catholic Online: “la meta de cada cristiano es dejar de la Cuaresma una persona más fuerte y vital de fe que cuando empezamos.” Así pues, la Cuaresma es una forma de redescubrir la fe y aprender nuevas enseñanzas y creencias sobre el cristianismo.
Otros días santos que los cristianos observan durante la Cuaresma incluyen el Domingo de Ramos. Celebrado el último domingo de Cuaresma, el día celebra la llegada de Cristo a Jerusalén poco antes de su crucifixión. La última semana de Cuaresma, también conocida como Semana Santa, observa la tragedia que se produjo poco después de la llegada de Jesús.
Durante la Semana Santa, los cristianos observan el Jueves Santo para conmemorar la última cena de Jesús con sus discípulos. Al día siguiente, observan el Viernes Santo para recordar la crucifixión de Jesús. Por último, celebran el Domingo de Pascua para conmemorar la resurrección de Jesús de entre los muertos y marcar el final de la Cuaresma.

What Lent means for Christians

For Christians, observing Lent means preparing for Jesus Christ’s ultimate sacrifice by making their own sacrifices.
The 40-day observation of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. Christians begin the preparation toward Easter by attending Mass and receiving the mark of ash on their foreheads. The ash comes from palm branches that were blessed the year before on Palm Sunday. This tradition reminds Christians to reflect on their current lives, repent and practice spiritual discipline.
During the 40 days, a Christian will renounce a food or habit that’s of significant importance to him or her. Many Christians over 14 years old also abstain from eating meat from Ash Wednesday to every Friday during Lent to represent Jesus’ 40-day fast in the wilderness.
In essence, Lent is a test for individuals to attempt to understand the sacrifices Jesus made and to discover one’s own morals. According to Catholic Online: “The goal of every Christian is to leave Lent a stronger and more vital person of faith than when we entered.” Thus, Lent is a way to rediscover one’s faith and relearn important teachings and beliefs about Christianity.
Other holy days that Christians observe during Lent include Palm Sunday. Held on the final Sunday of Lent, it celebrates Christ’s arrival in Jerusalem shortly before his crucifixion. The last week of Lent, also known as Holy Week, observes the tragedy that struck soon after Jesus’ arrival.
During Holy Week, Christians observe Holy Thursday (also called Maundy Thursday) to commemorate Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples. The day after that, they observe Good Friday to remember Jesus’ crucifixion. Lastly, they celebrate Easter Sunday to commemorate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead and mark the end of Lent.
Through the years, Christians have modified the way they observe Lent. Many observe this time in their own way.
