It has been a roller coaster the last few months – up and down with the DACA/DREAM Act news. Last week, the Congress passed a budget bill that will last until the end of the year. Unfortunately, it did not include anything about DACA/DREAM Act. Our best hope for action is next year after the elections, but you should take action now.
Immigration activists had pushed the Congress to include the DREAM Act in one of the spending bills since December. The spending bills are “must-pass” laws because they keep the government running. The bill the Congress passed will last until the end of the fiscal year (September 30, 2018). The next elections are on November 6, 2018. We need to win more seats in Congress for candidates who support immigrants in order to pass the DREAM Act next year. We will keep pushing for a solution for TPS and all 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US.
What can you do now? First, if you have DACA, make sure you renew it 5-6 months prior to its expiration date. The federal courts said that Trump’s cancellation of DACA was illegal, so they have to continue to renew the applications. That rule is on appeal to the Supreme Court, but it won’t be decided until sometime in 2019. If you never applied, you cannot apply for the first time right now.
Second, if you have family members that are US Citizens or Legal Permanent Residents, consider starting your permanent residency case. This is especially true for people with US citizen spouses. It may be possible to obtain your green card through family before the DREAM Act even passes.
Third, get involved! Join a community group like Cosecha KC (Find us on Facebook). Ask your US citizen family members and friends if they are registered to vote. Go to www.voteks.org or https://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/goVoteMissouri/register for information on how to register to vote. We will need everyone to do their part to make immigration reform a reality.

Desafortunadamente, no incluyó nada sobre la DACA / DREAM Act. Nuestra mejor esperanza para la acción es el próximo año después de las elecciones, pero debe tomar medidas ahora.
