Welcome tourists! In this edition we will talk about the capital of Colombia, the city hosting the XXIII Central American and Caribbean Games, without a doubt we are talking about Barranquilla. The foundation of the city goes back to 1630 when the Spanish government was still in power and gave part of those lands to populate what is now the city. The city has a population of just over one million citizens, while its metropolitan area has just over 2 million.
During the beginning of the last century, it was the main entry point to Colombia for thousands of immigrants, besides having the first advances in aviation, commercial radio and telephone.
The city has one of the most important folkloric and cultural festivities in all of Colombia, the “Carnival of Barranquilla”, which was declared Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003, making it one of the 5 most important carnivals of the world. It takes place at the beginning of the year, shortly before the beginning of Christian Lent and lasts for 4 days in which parades, costumes, music, and dances are mixed to demonstrate the diversity of the people of Barranquilla.
The round flights from Kansas to Barranquilla have an average price of $750 all year round and the vast majority have 2 layovers, but if you search in advance you can find some flights with only 1 layover. As far as mobility, I advise public transportation, it has an average price of $.75 per trip, the perks are that it is quite slow and usually very full. If you like more comfort there are plenty of car rental agencies. When it comes to accommodation you can find rooms in 3-star hotels for $45 a night and hostels for $15 a night. About the food, you can have a full meal for about $15 with dessert included, I advise you try the “arroz the lisa”, which consists of rice with vegetables and a marine fish of the region.
Now, in addition to the great attraction of the carnival there are many points of interest to visit in this beautiful Colombian city, here I detail some of them:
Museum from the Caribbean is the first regional museum in the country. Its main theme is the Colombian Caribbean in its environmental, historical and sociocultural dimensions. It helps to become aware of the environment, makes historical references from its citizens and the importance of the development of the region. You can also find a very interesting room of the illustrious writer, scriptwriter, journalist and Colombian editor Gabriel García Márquez.
Metropolitan Cathedral María Reina is a building of the modernist style that took 27 years to build, its design was made by the Italian architect Angelo Mazzoni de Grande. It has a monument of 16 tons in honor of Cristo Libertador, as well as large mosaics of San José and María Reina and a huge stained glass windows that represent the creation and sacraments of the Catholic Church. In addition to visiting such a beautiful Cathedral, you can take the opportunity to visit the Plaza de la Paz that is just in front and also houses large green areas and an art gallery.
If you go with your little ones or you like to enjoy the natural beauty of the animals, Zoo Barranquilla is highly recommended. The animals are very well cared for and the guides have a lot of information about each of the species that they have. The admission price starts at $6.
Romantic Museum is undoubtedly the best museum to understand the history and culture of the city. You will find some of the letters of the liberator Simón Bolívar or the typewriter with which Gabriel García Márquez wrote his first work. You can also find a special section of the Carnival. The entrance fee is $1.75

Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de la capital del departamento Atlántico de Colombia, ciudad en la que además actualmente se están llevando a cabo los XXIII Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe, sin lugar a dudas nos referimos a Barranquilla, Colombia. El establecimiento de la ciudad data de 1630 aproximadamente, cuando el gobierno español aún estaba en el poder y cedió parte de esas tierras para empezar a poblar lo que actualmente es la ciudad. La ciudad tiene una población poco mayor al millón de habitantes, mientras que su área metropolitana cuenta con poco más de 2 millones.
Durante los inicios del siglo pasado fue el principal punto de entrada a Colombia por miles de inmigrantes, además de que tuvo los primeros adelantos de la aviación, la radio comercial y la telefonía.
La ciudad cuenta con una de las festividades folclóricas y culturales más importantes de todo Colombia, el “Carnaval de Barranquilla”, el cual fue declarado Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 2003, siendo así uno de los 5 carnavales más importantes del mundo. Se lleva a cabo a inicios de año, poco antes del inicio de la cuaresma cristiana y tiene una duración de 4 días en los que los desfiles, los disfraces, la música y las danzas se mezclan para así demostrar la diversidad protagonista del pueblo barranquillero.
Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Barranquilla se encuentran en un costo promedio de $750 todo el año y la gran mayoría cuentan con 2 escalas pero si buscas con buen tiempo de anticipación podrás encontrar algunos vuelos con 1 escala. En cuanto a movilidad se refiere te recomiendo el transporte público, tiene un costo promedio de $.75 por viaje, el único detalle es que es bastante tardado y suele ir muy lleno, si gustas de mayor comodidad existen bastantes agencias de renta de autos. Hablando de hospedaje podrás encontrar habitaciones en hoteles 3 estrellas por $45 la noche y hostales por $15 la noche. Mientras que en cuestión de comida podrás tener una comida completa por unos $15 con postre incluido, te recomiendo que pruebes el arroz de lisa, el cual consiste en un arroz con verduras y lisa es un pescado marino de la región.
Ahora bien, además del gran atractivo del carnaval existen muchos puntos de interés para viajar a esta bella ciudad colombiana, aquí te detallo algunas de ellas:
Museo del Caribe, es el primer museo regional del país, su tema central es el Caribe colombiano en sus dimensiones ambientales, histórica y socioculturalmente. Ayuda a tomar conciencia del entorno del medio ambiente, hace referencias históricas de sus pobladores y de la importancia que tiene el desarrollo de la región. Además podrás encontrar una muy interesante sala del ilustre escritor, guionista, periodista y editor colombiano Gabriel García Márquez.
Catedral Metropolitana María Reina es una edificación del estilo modernista que llevó 27 años su construcción, su diseño fue realizado por el arquitecto italiano Angelo Mazzoni de Grande. Cuenta con monumento de 16 toneladas en homenaje a Cristo Libertador, además de grandes mosaicos de San José y María Reina así como de enormes vitrales que tienen en representación la creación y sacramentos de la Iglesia Católica. Además al momento de visitar tan bella Catedral podrás aprovechar para visitar la Plaza de la Paz que se encuentra justo al frente y alberga además de amplias zonas verdes una galería de arte.
Zoológico de Barranquilla, si vas con tus pequeños o bien te gusta disfrutar de la belleza natural de los animales este lugar es muy recomendable, además de que los animales se encuentran muy bien cuidados y los guías tienen mucha información de cada una de las especies que se encuentran aquí, los costos de entrada tienen un promedio de $6.
Museo Romántico, es sin duda el mejor museo para entender la historia y cultura de la ciudad, aquí podrás encontrar algunas de las cartas del Libertador Simón Bolívar o bien la máquina de escribir con la que escribió su primer obra Gabriel Garcia Márquez, también podrás encontrar una sección especial del Carnaval. El costo de entrada es de $1.75
