Welcome tourists! In this edition, we have to talk about a city in the state of Oregon, labeled as the “green city” for being one of the most ecological cities in the country. We are talking about Portland. The city was founded in 1851 and has just over 600,000 inhabitants and just over 2.2 million inhabitants throughout its metro area.
The first sector greatly developed in the city is the tech industry, with more than 1,200 companies being housed here, between headquarters and branches. Intel has more than 19,000 employees in this city. It also has offices of Google, Amazon, Xerox and HP, among others. The second most important industry sector is the sportswear manufacturing. Nike was founded just 11 km from Portland and employs more than 6,000 people. It also has delegations from Adidas, Dr. Martens, Columbia Sportswear, and Lacrosse Footwear, among others.
Round-trip flights between Kansas and Portland have an average cost of $250 and you can find direct flights or with 1 layover. The best way to get around Portland is by light rail; the cost for a day is $5 or $25 for the whole week. The city is also quite viable to use bicycles. If you want to rent a car it is quite easy to move within the city but there are few places for parking. Lodging in the city is more in tune with other cities, having an average cost of $110 in a 3-star hotel and $200 in a 5-star hotel. As for food, the variety is wide. It has American, Mexican, Italian, Asian restaurants and much more. The average cost of a full meal is $16.
The places you should visit in the city of Portland are the following:
*Portland Japanese Garden: thanks to its unique beauty, it is one of the most visited sites in the city. It was designed in 1967 by Professor Takuma Tono and was considered the second best Japanese garden outside of Japan. The garden has five rooms that make you transport to Japan without you noticing. It has cherry trees, a variety of fountains, azaleas, bridges and even a pagoda.
*Portland Zoo: founded in 1888, it is one of the oldest in the country. This zoo is well known worldwide for housing a large number of animals in danger of extinction. It has five exhibits: Great Northeast, Pacific Coasts, Fragile Forests, Asia and Africa. The entrance fee is $15 for adults and $10 for children.
*Oregon Museum of Science and Industry: it is undoubtedly one of the main innovation centers in the country. It has five exhibition halls, an Omnimax cinema, and an authentic Navy submarine. Its main purpose is to make people see how fun science and technology can be. Here you can do experiments in a laboratory, build a boat or a bridge, or see you age 25 years in the hall of Life Sciences. This museum also has a planetarium, where they give daily presentations of lights and lasers and describe the space and its galaxies. The entrance fee to the museum varies between $10 and $20 depending on the activities included in the package.
*Portland Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary: this sanctuary offers 58 hectares of forested areas. With more than 7 km of winding trails, you can enjoy a majestic walk along streams, ponds, native vegetation and plenty of wildlife. It is located just minutes from downtown.
*International Rose Test Garden: in this beautiful place you can enjoy more than 8,000 roses. A wide variety of shades and types of roses have been created on this site. The best time to visit this garden is between May and September, months in which most of the rose bushes have flowers.
Portland has more than 14,900 hectares of green spaces, where almost 300 public parks and about 270 km of trails are located. This is why it is one of the best cities to enjoy the nature and tranquility of the forests.

Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de una ciudad del estado de Oregón, nombrada como la “ciudad verde” por ser una de las ciudades más ecológicas de todo el país. Nos referimos a Portland, EE.UU. La ciudad fue fundada en el año 1851 y cuenta con poco más de 600 mil habitantes y con poco más de 2.2 millones de habitantes en toda su zona metropolitana.
El primer sector en el que se desarrolla la ciudad es la industria tecnológica, contando con más de 1,200 empresas de este rubro ya sea sede principal o una de sus delegaciones. Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Portland tienen un costo promedio de $250 y puedes encontrar vuelos directos o con 1 escala. La mejor forma de moverse por Portland es en tren ligero, el costo por todo un día es de $5 o $26 toda una semana. La ciudad también es bastante viable para usar bicicletas. Si deseas rentar un automóvil es bastante sencillo moverse dentro de la ciudad pero hay pocos lugares para estacionamiento. El hospedaje en la ciudad es más habitual al de otras ciudades teniendo un costo promedio de $110 en un hotel 3 estrellas y $200 en un hotel 5 estrellas. En cuanto a comida la variedad es muy amplia. Cuenta con restaurantes de comida americana, mexicana, italiana, oriental y mucho más. El costo promedio de una comida completa es de $16.
Los lugares que debes conocer en la ciudad de Portland son los siguientes:
* Jardín Japonés de Portland: gracias a su singular belleza es uno de los sitios más visitados de la ciudad. Fue diseñado en el año 1967 por el profesor Takuma Tono y fue considerado el segundo mejor jardín japonés fuera de Japón. El jardín cuenta con cinco estancias que hacen que te transportes a Japón sin que lo notes. Cuenta con árboles de cerezos, gran variedad de fuentes, azaleas, puentes y hasta una pagoda.
* Zoológico de Portland: fundado en el año 1888, lo hace uno de los más antiguos del país. Este zoológico es muy conocido a nivel mundial por albergar una gran cantidad de animales en peligro de extinción. Tiene cinco exhibiciones: Gran Noreste, Costas del Pacífico, Bosques Frágiles, Asia y África. El costo de entrada es de $15 adultos y $10 niños.
* Museo de Ciencia e Industria de Oregón: es sin duda uno de los principales centros de innovación del país. Cuenta con cinco salas de exposiciones, un cine Omnimax y un auténtico submarino de la Marina. Su principal propósito es el de hacerles ver a las personas lo divertida que puede llegar a ser la ciencia y la tecnología. Aquí dentro podrás hacer experimentos en un laboratorio, construir un bote o un puente, o bien verte envejecer 25 años en el salón de las Ciencias de la Vida. Este museo también cuenta con un planetario en donde diariamente dan presentaciones de luces y rayos láser y describen el espacio y sus galaxias. El costo de entrada al museo varía entre los $10 y los $20 dependiendo de las actividades que incluya el paquete.
* Reserva Natural de la Sociedad Audubon de Portland: esta reserva ofrece 58 hectáreas de áreas boscosas. Con más de 7 km de sinuosos senderos, podrás disfrutar de un majestuoso paseo por arroyos, estanques, vegetación nativa además de bastante fauna silvestre. Se encuentra a sólo unos minutos del centro de la ciudad.
* Jardín Internacional de Experimentación de Rosas: en este bellísimo lugar podrás disfrutar de más de 8 mil rosales. En este sitio se han creado gran variedad de tonalidades y tipos de rosas. La mejor época para visitar este jardín es entre mayo y septiembre, meses en los que la mayoría de los rosales tienen sus flores.
Portland cuenta con más de 14,900 hectáreas de espacios verdes, en donde se ubican casi 300 parques públicos y cerca de 270 kilómetros de senderos. Es por esto que es una de las mejores ciudades para disfrutar de la naturaleza y la tranquilidad de los bosques.
