Equipos de bomberos llegaron el lunes, 13 de abril, a la escena infernal que envolvió todo un centro comercial Olathe, Kan. — que contenía al restaurante mexicano Fronteras — el cual se inició en el salón de belleza vecino.
Los investigadores suponen que el fuego comenzó alrededor de las 8:30 p.m. del lunes, lo que explica por qué los trabajadores del restaurante sólo vieron humo al principio sin ninguna fuente distinguible. Su propietario, Salvador de la Torre, comentó que recibió una llamada reportando humo ligero; y les dijo a sus empleados que abandonaran el edificio y llamaran a los servicios de emergencia. Sólo al llegar e inspeccionar todo el edificio, los bomberos encontraron el fuego que había pasado a ser un infierno para el momento que fue detectado.
“Era solamente humo, nada más. Nosotros pensamos que sólo íbamos a tener daños por humo, pero se prendió en llamas y estábamos como… perdidos”, refirió Alia De La Torre, hija del dueño. “Yo estaba aquí viéndolo todo”.
El fuego consumió al restaurante, al salón y las tiendas vecinas Sprint y KFC en la intersección de las calles 135 y Black Bob. Nadie resultó herido. Miembros de cinco departamentos de bomberos, incluyendo aquellos de la vecina Overland Park y Lenexa, uniéndose a la cuadrilla de Olathe para apagar el fuego.
Fronteras tiene una sucursal en Lenexa y se está preparando una apertura en Gardner, Kan. El restaurante ha estado activo por seis años en Olathe.

Fire crews arrived on Monday (April 13) at the scene of the inferno that engulfed an entire Olathe, Kan., strip mall — which contained Fronteras, a Mexican restaurant — started in the neighboring salon.
Investigators hypothesize the fire began around 8:30 p.m. on Monday, thus explaining why the restaurant workers saw only smoke at first with no discernible source. Fronteras owner Salvador de la Torre said he got a call reporting light smoke. He told his employees to leave the building and call emergency services. Only on arriving and inspecting the whole building did firefighters find the blaze, which had graduated into a rolling inferno by the time it was detected.
“It was just smoke, that’s it. We thought we were just going to have smoke damage, but it flamed up and we were, like, done,” said Alia De La Torre, the owner’s daughter. “I was here watching it all.”
The blaze consumed the restaurant, the salon, and neighboring Sprint and KFC stores at the 135th Street and Black Bob intersection. No one was injured. Members of five fire departments, including those from neighboring Overland Park and Lenexa, joined the Olathe crew in putting out the fire.
Fronteras has a Lenexa location and is preparing an opening in Gardner, Kan. The restaurant had been active for six years in Olathe.
