Jefe de Redacción de Dos Mundos gana Premio Pinnacle
Clara Reyes es una de los cuatro ganadores de los premios Pinnacle 2015. La Fundación de la Biblioteca del Condado Johnson anunció a los ganadores de la 14ª competencia anual el 26 de agosto, quienes fueron seleccionados de los nominados presentados la primavera pasada. Los premios reconocen a líderes por sus “contribuciones excepcionales para el progreso de la comunidad”.
Reyes es honrada por excelencia en negocios y espíritu empresarial.
Para mí fue una gran sorpresa. Me siento muy bendecida y agradecida”, dijo ella.
También se premió a Fred Logan por excelencia en abogacía y participación pública; a Cheryl Kimmi por excelencia en las artes; a Pete Cowdin y Deb Pettid por excelencia en educación y alfabetización. Logan es abogado y líder cívico por largo tiempo. Kimmi es fundadora y directora ejecutiva de KC Fringe Festival. Cowdin y Pettid son dueños de la librería Reading Reptile en Brookside.
Los premios serán entregados el 22 de octubre en Regnier Center en Johnson County Community College. Los boletos para la cena y ceremonia de premios, la cual recauda dinero para apoyar al sistema de las bibliotecas del condado Johnson tienen un costo de $75. Aunque ella es reconocida como la fundadora y redactora de Dos Mundos, un periódico ganador de premios, Reyes también es la ganadora de premios por liderazgo y participación cívica. En el 2011, el gobierno mexicano le otorgó el premio Ohtli por “contribuciones perdurables para el avance… de hispanos en Estados Unidos”, el cual es uno de los honores máximos de México.
Ella ha recibido honores de grupos como la Sociedad Cultural Azteca, la Fundación Mattie Rhodes, Centro Guadalupe y otras agencias que dan servicio a la comunidad hispana. Reyes ha encabezado la Coalición de Mujeres Hispanas contra el Cáncer y ha colaborado en las directivas de instituciones que incluyen Avila University, St. Luke´s Health System, Salvation Army, MANA de Kansas City y la Health Coalition. En el 2006, ella fue invitada para entregar el discurso anual Huck Boyd en Kansas State University.
Reyes fundó el primer periódico en inglés y español en una región de cuatro estados hace 34 años y aún es la editora ejecutiva. Bajo su dirección, la publicación semanal ha expandido su cobertura hacia noticias nacionales e internacionales así como locales; y la circulación sigue aumentando hacia más de 20,000. Dos Mundos ha ganado premios de la Asociación Nacional de Publicaciones Hispanas, entre ellas el Premio al Éxito de por Vida; y en el 2005, la organización nombró a Reyes la Editora Latina del Año.
La Administración de Pequeñas Empresas de Estados Unidos, el Departamento de Comercio Kansas de y Kansas City Business Journal han pagado tributo a Reyes por contribuir a la vitalidad económica del área y su compromiso para dar servicio a la comunidad hispana mediante la edición y radiodifusión. Junto con su esposo Manuel, su hija Diana Raymer y su hijo Edward Reyes, ella dirige las tres estaciones de radio en español locales de Reyes Media Group
Reyes es miembro chárter y cofundadora de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Estados Unidos y la Asociación Comercial de Southwest Boulevard.
El premio Pinnacle, que se entregó por primera vez en el 2002 para reconocer la excelencia en las artes, ahora premia a individuos extraordinarios en áreas adicionales “que trabajan incansablemente para hacer de nuestra ciudad un mejor lugar para vivir”.
Dos Mundos editor wins Pinnacle Award

Clara Reyes is one of four 2015 Pinnacle awards recipients. The Johnson County Library Foundation announced the winners of the 14th annual competition on Aug. 26. They were selected from nominees submitted this spring. The awards recognize leaders for their “exceptional contributions to advance the community.”
Reyes is being honored for excellence in business and entrepreneurship.
“It was really surprising to me,” Reyes said. “I feel so blessed and humbled.”
Also being honored are Fred Logan for excellence in advocacy and public engagement; Cheryl Kimmi for excellence in the arts; and Pete Cowdin and Deb Pettid for excellence in education and literacy. Logan is an attorney and longtime civic leader. Kimmi is the founder and executive director of the KC Fringe Festival. Cowdin and Pettid own the Reading Reptile bookstore in Brookside.
The awards will be presented on Oct. 22 in the Regnier Center at Johnson County Community College. The public is welcome to attend. Tickets to the dinner and awards ceremony, which raises money to support the Johnson County Library system, are $75. Register online at www.jocolibrary.org.
Although she’s renowned as the founder and editor of Dos Mundos, an award-winning newspaper, Reyes is also the recipient of awards for leadership and civic engagement. In 2011, the Mexican government presented her with the Ohtli Award for “enduring contributions to the advancement … of Hispanics in the United States.” It’s one of Mexico’s highest honors.
She’s received honors from such groups as the Azteca Cultural Society, the Mattie Rhodes Foundation, the Guadalupe Center and other agencies that serve the Hispanic community. Reyes has led the Coalition of Hispanic Women Against Cancer and served on the boards of institutions that include Avila University, St. Luke’s Health System, the Salvation Army, MANA de Kansas City and the Health Coalition. In 2006, she was invited to deliver the annual Huck Boyd Lecture at Kansas State University.
Reyes founded the four-state region’s first English-Spanish newspaper 34 years ago and is still the executive editor. Under her leadership, the weekly publication has expanded coverage to national and international as well as local news; and circulation has grown to more than 20,000. Dos Mundos has won awards from the National Association of Hispanic Publications, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. And in 2005, the organization named Reyes Latina Publisher of the Year.
The U.S. Small Business Administration, the Kansas Department of Commerce and the Kansas City Business Journal are among organizations that have paid tribute to Reyes for contributing to the area’s economic vitality and her commitment to serving the Hispanic community through publishing and broadcasting. Along with her husband, Manuel, daughter, Diana Raymer and son, Edward Reyes, she manages the Reyes Media Group’s three local Spanish-language radio stations.
Reyes is a charter member and co-founder of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Southwest Boulevard Business Association.
The Pinnacle Award, first presented in 2002 to recognize excellence in the arts, now honors outstanding individuals in additional areas “who work tirelessly to make our city a better place to live for all.”
