Study shows students unprepared for college

By Paula Alzate

High school students are entering college unprepared and with minimum abilities to read or handle the readings that college requires, according to a study by the Institute of Education Sciences.
“Students are not prepared for the rigorous reading required in entry-level college and career work,” the study stated.
The study showed the following results:

*Females are more prepared than male students – 55 percent, compared to 46 percent.
*Asian, white and Native American students were more prepared than Hispanic and African American students.
*English-as-a-second-language students were less prepared than other students.
*Students taking one career and technical education course or more were less prepared than other students.

Daniel Mayer, chief learning officer for Academic Virtual Education, said in an interview that the United States needs to examine “the way that we are teaching” to better prepare students for college.
“This is not going to solve everything, but it’s a step in the right direction,” Mayer said.
