Wounded veterans becoming modelling sensations

By Paula Alzate

For many veterans, losing a limb impedes them from displaying their bodies because of the scars war has left.
Some wounded veterans, however, are proud to display their bodies, as Michael Stokes has learned.
Stokes, a recognized photographer from California, has photographed war veterans since 2012. His latest book, “Always Loyal,” features male veteran models who’ve survived combat and display their bodies in semi-nude and/or nude shoots.
According to The Mighty, the book has reaped more than $49,000 in profits. Stokes is working on the next edition, to be called “Bare Strength.” Money from the sales of the books will be donated to non-profits that support wounded veterans.
Stokes – whose work has been recognized on TV shows such as “Good Morning America” and late night shows – said many of the veterans who’ve posed for him came to him “very healed and ready to take the world on.” That’s what he wants to show in his books, he said.
