HUD impulsa problematica para hacer vivienda absequible

HUD

HUD makes strong play to address affordable housing issues

Commentary by Dermidio Juez-Perez
For a few years, the affordable U.S. housing market has faced some serious issues. A study suggests that a quarter of all renters in the United States spend more than half their income amount on rent. And our nation losses more than 300,000 affordable housing units a year because of deterioration and old age.
On Jan. 28, hoping to solve the issue by stimulating the production and rehab of affordable, mixed-income and energy-efficient housing, the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) announced it would cut multifamily mortgage insurance rates.
Scheduled to start on April 1, this rate reduction will directly impact FHA’s multifamily housing programs and properties housing low- and moderate-income families. The FHA estimates this will result in the creation of new units, the rehabilitation of existing affordable units and improve energy efficiency to help reduce utility costs for residents.
During the announcement, which took place at an affordable housing community in Columbus, Ohio, Julian Castro, secretary of HUD, said: “More Americans will have a safe place to call home.”
“By reducing our rates, this administration is taking a significant step to encourage the preservation and development of affordable and energy-efficient housing in communities large and small,” Castro commented. “This way, hard-working families won’t have to make the false choice between quality or affordable housing.”
With families across the country struggling to afford a safe place to live, this plan couldn’t have come at a better time. It appears the serious issues that have hurt the U.S. housing market over the past few years are finally being addressed.
