Trump has hard road to presidency

Commentary by Dermidio Juez-Perez
After months of uncertainty, it’s clear that entrepreneur Donald J. Trump will be the Republican Party’s 2016 presidential nominee. But not everything is great for “The Donald.” Indeed, he has a hard road ahead of him.
Only a few Republicans support Trump’s candidacy. Many don’t sound enthusiastic about his candidacy. Others flat out don’t support Trump.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who ran against Trump during the presidential primaries, was among the first Republicans to support him. Recently, he stated: “There is no one who is better prepared to provide America with the strong leadership … than Donald Trump.” Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence also have voiced their support for Trump.
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida is among the many Republicans who’ve endorsed Trump, yet sound insincere about it.
“I’ve always said I’m going to support the Republican nominee, and that’s especially true now that it’s apparent that Hillary Clinton is going to be the Democratic candidate,” Rubio stated recently.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also has endorsed Trump, but only because he has committed himself to supporting the party’s nominee.
However, many high-profile Republicans don’t support Trump. Former President George H.W. Bush, former President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush are in that group. So is Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP nominee.
“I see way too much demagoguery and populism on both sides of the aisle and I only hope and aspire that we’ll see more greatness.… I don’t intend on supporting either of the major party candidates at this point,” Romney said.
U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina strongly expressed his disapproval of Trump’s candidacy when he stated: “I cannot, in good conscience, support Donald Trump because I do not believe he is a reliable Republican conservative, nor has he displayed the judgment and temperament to serve as commander in chief.”
Last but not least, House Speaker Paul Ryan remains undecided. “I’m just not ready to do that at this point,” Ryan said. “I’m not there right now.”
It appears that Trump not only must fight the Democrats, but also members of his own party as he campaigns to be America’s 45th president. That will make his road to the presidency a hard one to navigate.
