We asked six registered voters which candidate they support in the 2016 presidential primary. Here’s what they said.
LeighAnne Koppelman, 69, retired high school science teacher, registered Democrat: The Democratic platform always looks out for education so I will vote for the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton. It would be disastrous to have a President Trump, and Bernie Sanders doesn’t stand a chance against Hillary; she’s too powerful and well-known.
Molly Bailey, 19, college freshman, registered Democrat: Hillary is a very strong candidate. She was a strong first lady, United States senator and secretary of state. She’s fearless. She’ll make a strong president, not to mention the first woman president of the United States.
Lila Gálvez, 48, homemaker, registered Democrat: There are two Democrats (candidates for president). Only one cares about the children of Honduras who escaped here after Berta (Cáceres, Honduran human rights leader) was killed. Hillary wants to send them back to Honduras. She said that on TV in a debate. Bernie (Sanders) said we should make them welcome and help them make a good life here. He really cares about all people, not just the rich people.
Luis (last name withheld), 33, investment strategist, registered Independent: I can’t support the Republicans’ anti-establishment candidate, Donald Trump so I’m supporting the Democrats’ insurgent candidate, Bernie Sanders. I believe the American political system is rigged in favor of the rich and powerful. Hillary Clinton is a puppet of Wall Street; she’s sucking in millions of dollars from the financial industry, and she’ll say and do anything to get elected.
Sam Lehrich, 55, forklift operator, registered Republican: Nobody’s buying (Donald) Trump’s influence. He’s paying for his own campaign out of his own pocket. I’m sick and tired of government getting bigger and bigger and the rich getting richer and richer and the rest of us getting poorer and poorer. It’s time to take back our government and our country. Trump wants to make America great again. He’s got my vote.
Dan Hall, 22, mechanic, registered Republican: I’m with my daddy and granddaddy. They’re both Republicans. Donald Trump is looking out Number 1 for Americans. He’s going to cut our taxes. He’s going to protect our borders, and he’s going to make big companies bring their businesses back to America and hire Americans. Donald tells the truth; he says what he means and means what he says, and he doesn’t care who likes it or not.
