La Convención Nacional Republicana ha terminado – afortunadamente. La “Convención Trump”, que concluyó el 21 de julio en Cleveland se llevó a cabo con violencia, caos y un fuerte sentimiento anti-inmigrante. El lema para su primer día fue “Hagamos América segura de nuevo.” Sin embargo, en vez de contarnos cómo van a hacer para que “Estados Unidos sea un lugar seguro” basaron sus discursos en contra la inmigración y responsabilizaron a los inmigrantes por los problemas de seguridad en el país.
Afortunadamente, esto no sucedió sin una respuesta por parte de los inmigrantes y defensores de la inmigración. Cientos de personas se reunieron fuera del “Quicken Loans Arena” de Cleveland para hacer oír su voz. Por ejemplo, en el tercer día de la convención, cientos de personas formaron lo que parecía un muro humano en frente del evento mediante el uso de telas pintadas que parecían ser ladrillos rojos. Unidos mano a mano, los manifestantes se pusieron de pie con el lema “Wall off Trump” (muralla para Trump).
Trump y el Partido Republicano han creando tanto odio y tanta es la preocupación que la gente vino de todas del país para demostrar su desaprobación hacia las filosofías de Trump. “Los muros que se construyen para separarnos nunca serán tan fuertes como las paredes de nuestros corazones”, fue uno de los muchos cantos pacíficos que los manifestantes entonaron ese día.
Estas manifestaciones pacíficas son importante y demuestran qué tan fuerte somos los latinos y nuestra comunidad de inmigrante. Por desgracia, no vale la pena el esfuerzo a menos que todos los inmigrantes se presenten en noviembre para votar en la elección presidencial.
Trump – o cualquier otro candidato presidencial – no pueden convertirse en presidente de los Estados Unidos sin nuestros votos. Así que por favor voten en noviembre. Sin su voto, los inmigrantes y la comunidad latina no podemos hacer una diferencia. No hay que dejarse intimidar por la violencia y el odio del Partido Republicano. No alimentemos de ese odio para hacernos más fuertes.
Vamos a seguir haciendo oír nuestra voz.

Peaceful reactions to a violent, hateful convention

The Republican National Convention is finally over – thankfully.
The “Trump Convention” that concluded on July 21 in Cleveland was filled with violence, chaos and a strong anti-immigrant sentiment. The slogan for its first day was “Make America Safe Again.” Unfortunately, viewers didn’t hear how Republicans will “make America safe again.” Instead, they heard speeches against immigration and Republicans blaming immigrants for America’s safety issues.
Fortunately, this didn’t go without a response from immigrants and immigration advocates. Hundreds of people gathered outside Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena to make their voices heard. For instance, on the third day of convention, hundreds of people formed what looked like a human wall in front of the arena by using sheets painted to look like red bricks. Linked arm in arm, the protestors stood together, with “Wall off Trump” as their slogan.
Trump and the Republican Party are creating so much hate and worry that people came from across the country to demonstrate their disapproval toward Trump’s philosophies. “The walls that they build to tear us apart will never be as strong as the walls of our hearts” was one of the many peaceful statements the demonstrators chanted that day.
Such peaceful demonstrations are great and show how strong that Latinos and immigrant community can be. Unfortunately, they’re not worth the effort unless immigrants and Latinos show up in November to vote in the presidential election.
Trump – or any other presidential candidate, for that matter – cannot become president of the United States without our votes. So please vote in November. Without your vote, immigrants and the Latino community cannot make a difference.
Let’s not be intimidated by the Republican Party’s violence and hatred. Let’s feed off of it to make ourselves stronger.
Let’s keep making our voices heard.
