Frank Sharry: la nueva propuesta migratoria de es una artimaña
Washington, DC — Presentamos a continuación un comunicado de Frank Sharry, Director Ejecutivo de America’s Voice, en torno al encuentro de Donald Trump con el presidente de México, Enrique Peña Nieto, el mismo día en que el candidato presidencial dará un discurso sobre su política migratoria en Phoenix:
“Donald Trump y su campaña llevan a cabo un intento desesperado para dar una nueva imagen a un candidato impreparado y que impulsa un abierto nativismo. Tanto el fanfarroneado viaje a México como el exagerado anuncio de su discurso en inmigración que dará en Phoenix son elementos clave en su esfuerzo por reinventarse. El nuevo grupo de expertos de la campaña de Trump quiere mantener el apoyo del candidato de una base que ama su racismo, mientras intenta engañar a votantes suburbanos haciéndoles creer que ahora es más razonable.
“Las nuevas frases que formarán parte del discurso de Trump sobre inmigración –aplicar la ley, no a las ciudades santuario, E-Verify obligatorio, instituir controles de entrada y salida, etc. – son una muestra probada y creada con el fin de quitar el hedor de su insoportable idea de la deportación masiva. Pero esto no representa un verdadero cambio. Las parrafadas que escucharemos esta noche no deben ni pueden borrar este hecho fundamental: los resultados que persigue la estrategia migratoria de Trump no han cambiado: todos los inmigrantes indocumentados deben salir de Estados Unidos.
“No nos dejemos engañar. La única manera en que los inmigrantes indocumentados pueden obtener estatus legal con vía a la ciudadanía en Estados Unidos es si el Congreso cambia la ley para abrir la oportunidad de que lo soliciten y sean aprobados aquí en el país. Es posible que Trump diga algo como ‘todos aquellos que están aquí ilegalmente que quieran vivir en EEUU tienen que regresar a su país y solicitar como todo el mundo’. Esto no es más que un cruel engaño. No hay una fila para los inmigrantes indocumentados en sus países de origen. Es por ello que muchos vienen sin autorización. Los inmigrantes indocumentados no van a dejar sus trabajos, sus familias, ni sus hogares en Estados Unidos para solicitar un reingreso cuando, con base en la ley actual, no hay manera de obtener la readmisión.
“He aquí la prueba de fuego para esta noche: ¿prometerá Trump trabajar con el Congreso a fin de cambiar la ley para que a los inmigrantes indocumentados les sea otorgada la oportunidad de solicitar el estatus legal sin dejar EEUU? Si no, entonces se trata de deportación para todos, con una carita feliz estampada en la nueva imagen que pretende tener”.
Frank Sharry: Trump’s Immigration Repackaging Is a Ruse
The following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, on a day in which Donald Trump will meet with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and deliver an immigration policy speech in Phoenix:
“Donald Trump and his campaign are engaged in a desperate attempt to repackage an unfit candidate running on overt nativism. Both the grandstanding trip to Mexico and tonight’s hyped immigration speech in Phoenix are key components in this rebranding effort. The Trump campaign’s new brain trust wants to maintain the candidate’s support from a base that loves Trump’s racism, while attempting to fool suburban voters that he is more reasonable.
The new phrases that will be part of Trump’s immigration speech – enforce the law, no sanctuary cities, mandate E-Verify, institute entry-exit controls, etc. – are focus-group tested and purpose-built to remove the stench of his odious embrace of mass deportation. But this is a change in packaging only. The word blizzard we will hear tonight should not and cannot obscure this fundamental fact: the intended outcome of Trump’s immigration strategy is unchanged: every undocumented immigrant must leave America.
Let’s not be fooled. The only way undocumented immigrants can gain legal status with a path to citizenship in the United States is if Congress changes the law to create a way to apply for and get approved here in America. Trump is likely to say something like ‘those here illegally who want to live in the U.S. have to return to their country and apply like everyone else.” This is nothing but a cruel hoax. There is no line for undocumented immigrants to get into in their countries of origin. That’s why many came without authorization. Undocumented immigrants are not going to leave jobs, family, and homes in America to apply for re-entry when under current law there is no way to gain re-admission.
Here’s the test for tonight: will Trump promise to work with Congress to change the law so that undocumented immigrants are given a chance to apply for legal status from within the U.S.? If not, then it’s deportation for all, with a happy face sticker slapped on the brand new packaging.”
