Nada puede darse por sentado en una carrera presidencial. Si no me crees pregúntale a Hillary Clinton.
La candidata demócrata a la presidencia no se atrevió a proclamar su probable victoria pero aclaró recientemente: “Siento que estamos en una posición fuerte, pero no estamos teniendo ningún lugar, nadie, nada por sentado.”
Eso es tener una buena actitud. La carrera presidencial es impredecible. Las encuestas pueden cambiar en cuestión de días. Por ejemplo, antes del pasado fin de semana (Sept. 9-11), no había duda de Clinton tenía la ventaja sobre el candidato republicano Donald Trump. Sin embargo, nadie podría haber predicho lo que ocurrió durante el fin de semana.
En primer lugar, Clinton dijo algo que ella misma describió como un reclamo “groseramente generalista”: “Se podría poner la mitad de los partidarios de Trump a lo que llamó la canasta de deplorables, ¿verdad? El racista, sexista, homófobo, xenófobo, islamófobo, lo que sea.” Teniendo en cuenta que el lema de la campaña de Clinton es “más fuertes juntos”, su mensaje fue inadecuado. Nothing can be taken for granted in the race to the U.S. presidency.
Ask Hillary Clinton.
The Democratic presidential candidate wouldn’t claim her likely victory when she recently stated: “I feel we’re in a strong position, but we’re not taking any place, anyone, anything for granted.”
That’s a good attitude. The race to the presidency is unpredictable. Poll numbers can change within days. Case in point: Before the past weekend (Sept. 9-11), there was no doubt Clinton had the upper hand over Republican candidate Donald Trump; however, no one could’ve predicted what took place over the weekend.
First, Clinton made what she described as a “grossly generalistic” claim: “You could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables, right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it.” Considering that Clinton’s campaign slogan is “Stronger Together,” her message was inappropriate. Promptly, she tried to fix the damage by stating: “I regret saying ‘half.’ That was wrong.”
Later during the weekend, the candidate’s health took a turn for the worse. During a ceremony in New York City, she had to be supported as she stumbled into her vehicle. No explanations were given until an aide told reporters Clinton had “overheated.” Later in the day, the campaign disclosed that Clinton had been diagnosed with pneumonia and prescribed antibiotics two days before the incident.
A statement from Clinton’s doctor read: “She was put on antibiotics, and advised to rest and modify her schedule. While at this morning’s event, she became overheated and dehydrated. I have just examined her and she is now rehydrated and recovering nicely.”
Following Clinton’s unpredictable weekend, some polls showed her lead slipping. Even Clinton’s supporters were uneasy with the situation. Perhaps they were reminded, as it was mentioned above, that the race to the presidency is unpredictable – i.e., that nothing can be taken for granted.
