Así, la comunidad hispana estará ligeramente mejor representada en el Senado. Sin embargo, nosotros los latinos todavía no estamos representados como deberíamos, considerando el número de hispanos que viven en esta gran nación.

Latina makes history with election victory

In one way, the Nov. 8 elections were disappointing for this great nation. However, in another way, they provided great hope.
One state made history: Nevada elected the first-ever Latina to serve in the U.S. Senate.
Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto will help represent Nevada in Washington, D.C. During her campaign, Cortez Masto stressed the importance of making the Latino voice heard in politics.
“Don’t you think it is about time that we had diversity in the U.S. Senate?” she asked rhetorically. “Don’t you think it’s about time that our government mirrors the people we serve every day?”
I couldn’t agree more.
Cortez Masto, who’s of Mexican descent, helped add diversity to the Senate by winning a tight race in Nevada. She defeated Republican Joe Heck partly because of outside groups that heavily supported her financially. More than $90 million were spent by her campaign team.
Ironically, though, the most significant support Cortez Masto received wasn’t financial – and it came from a Republican: Donald J. Trump.
The 52-year-old former Nevada attorney general focused her campaign on immigration and the future of the U.S. Supreme Court. She successfully took advantage of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s platform for serving the Hispanic community while speaking out against Trump’s most controversial views, particularly on immigration. And she differentiated herself from Republican Joe Heck.
Cortez Masto commented on her historic win by tweeting: “I’m proud to be Nevada’s first female and our nation’s first Latina senator. It’s about time our government mirrors the diversity of our nation.” And during her victory speech, Cortez Masto promised that, if Trump were elected president, “I will be one hell of a check and balance on him.”
With Cortez Masto’s victory, there’ll will be four Latinos in the Senate: Republicans Marco Rubio of Florida and Ted Cruz of Texas, and Cortez Masto and fellow Democrat Robert Menendez of New Jersey. Thus, the Hispanic community will be slightly better represented in the Senate. However, we Latinos are still underrepresented, considering the number of Hispanics who live in this great nation.
