As we draw closer to January 20, 2017, the day Donald Trump will be sworn in as the President of the United States, we are beginning to understand how his cabinet will look. Trump has asked retired four-star general John Kelly to serve as the head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Contained within DHS are Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Described by the Washington Post as a “blunt-spoken border-security hawk,” Kelly spent more than 40 years in the Marine Corps, and served under the Obama administration as the head of military operations in Latin America. He has also spent time leading combat forces against the Islamic State in the Middle East. Kelly advocates for more stringent protections across our southern border, which could include construction of a wall or fence. However, many news outlets report that he is far more concerned with fixing the systemic root issues (e.g. poverty and violence) that drive immigrants across our southern border. He advocates for helping countries in Central America return to “reasonable levels of violence and reasonable levels of economic opportunity.” Even so, he has voiced strong concern about drugs, terrorism, and other potential threats traveling through the southern border and has actively advocated for more resources to curtail those threats.
We will continue to provide updates and advocate for our clients to ensure every immigrant living within the U.S. receives lawful protection under the new administration.
