*Conversation between North and South Korea: Under Kim Jong-un’s orders, North Korea made its first call in two years through a hotline to South Korea. The 20-minute call is seen by some political experts as a diplomatic breakthrough in restoring a channel for direct dialogue between the two nations.
*Continuing tensions between North Korea and the United States: Recently, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un warned the United States that he has as a button to launch nuclear weapons on his desk. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted that he has a launch button, too, and claimed that his is “much bigger and more powerful.”
*Protests in Iran: In late December 2017, anti-government protestors began taking to the streets of the Middle Eastern country. As multiple news agencies have reported, security forces confronted the demonstrators, resulting in more than 20 deaths and 400-plus arrests. Pro-government counter-protesters are hitting the streets, too. The protesters are waving Iranian flags and showing their support for Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s government.
*Freed hostage faces charges in Canada: Joshua Boyle, who was kidnapped in 2012 with his family in Afghanistan, faces 15 charges connected to incidents that allegedly took place in October 2017 after Boyle and his family had returned to Canada.
*“Bomb cyclone:” Eastern and Southern states are experiencing severe winter weather. Florida, where some residents haven’t seen snow in almost 30 years, could get as much as an inch of snow and ice, according to forecasts. At press time, 11 cold-related deaths had been reported from the “bomb cyclone.” Much of the United States is experiencing near-freezing or sub-freezing temperatures.
*Transit accident in Lima, Peru: A bus dropped into a ravine Tuesday (Jan. 2) after being crashed into by a truck. At press time, the death toll was at 48, with six people reported as injured.
