Recently, I commented on the reopening of communication between North and South Korea. Little is known about the content of the phone calls, but there was plenty of specualtion.
This time, I’ll concentrate on what I know to be true: Bilateral communication is going strong, and face-to-face meetings have taken place. Furthermore, the two Koreas intend to take their dialog beyond the Winter Olympics.
Most of the facts reported by media outlets about North-South communications have been related to the Winter Olympics. Not only will North Korea’s athletes be represented in the Winter Olympics, but North Korea will serve in a sort of co-host role. For instance, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s favorite girl band (the Moranbong Band) is rumored to be performing there, and North and South Korea will march into the opening ceremony together under a unified flag. Additionally, the International Olympics Committee has approved the creation of a unified women’s ice hockey team. Moreover, on Monday (Jan., 22), the decisions were formalized when the lead singer of Kim’s favorite girl band and a North Korean delegation toured Seoul.
Understandably, many South Koreans aren’t happy with the recent turn of events. They believe their country has worked too hard and invested too much to have to share the Olympics with North Korea, which has given them nothing but troubles for decades. But others have received the news with much interest. Case in point: Media outlets followed Moranbong Band lead singer Hyon Song-wul’s every step during her trip to South Korea, reporting on what coffee she drinks and what she has for breakfast.
Unfortunately, however, some opponents to North Koreans coming into South Korea set fire to a portrait of Kim – and North Korean flags near where a North Korean delegation was staying. “The local media and news industries should get their stories straight,” they chanted. “We are against North Koreans coming here,” others said.
Hopefully, the conversations between the North and South Korean governments will continue to be peaceful. There is some hope of that, as South and North Korea have agreed to conduct military talks.
Hopefully, the peaceful cooperation between the two Koreas will continue, too – and extend far beyond the Winter Olympics

Corea del Norte y del Sur están más unidas que nunca
Recientemente, comenté sobre la reapertura de la comunicación entre Corea del Norte y Corea del Sur. Poco se sabe sobre el contenido de las llamadas telefónicas, pero han surgido muchas especulaciones.
En este artículo me concentraré en lo que sé que es verdad: la comunicación bilateral continúa con fuerza y se han llevado a cabo reuniones cara a cara. Además, las dos Coreas pretenden llevar su diálogo más allá de los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno.
La mayoría de los hechos reportados por los medios sobre las comunicaciones Norte-Sur se han relacionado con los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno. No sólo los atletas de Corea del Norte estarán representados en los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno, sino que Corea del Norte será una especie de coanfitrión. Por ejemplo, se rumorea que la banda de chicas favorita del líder norcoreano Kim Jong Un (la Banda de Moranbong) se presentará allí, y Corea del Norte y Corea del Sur marcharán en la ceremonia de apertura juntas bajo una bandera unificada. Además, el Comité Olímpico Internacional ha aprobado la creación de un equipo unificado de hockey sobre hielo femenino.
El lunes (22 de enero), las decisiones se formalizaron con la visita de la vocalista principal de la banda femenina favorita de Kim y una delegación norcoreana recorrieron Seúl.
Es comprensible que muchos surcoreanos no estén contentos con el reciente giro de los acontecimientos. Creen que su país ha trabajado demasiado e invertido demasiado para tener que compartir los Juegos Olímpicos con Corea del Norte, quien no les ha dado más que problemas durante décadas. Algunos opositores prendieron fuego a un retrato de Kim y banderas de Corea del Norte cerca de donde se alojaba una delegación de Corea del Norte. “Los medios locales y las industrias de noticias deberían aclarar sus historias”, cantaron. “Estamos en contra de los norcoreanos que vienen aquí”, dijeron otros.
Pero otros han recibido las noticias con mucho interés. Los medios de comunicación siguieron a la cantante principal de Moranbong Band, Hyon Song-wul, durante cada paso de su viaje a Corea del Sur, informando hasta qué café toma y qué desayuna.
Con suerte, las conversaciones entre los gobiernos de Corea del Norte y del Sur continuarán siendo pacíficas. Hay alguna esperanza de que Corea del Sur y Corea del Norte hayan acordado llevar a cabo conversaciones militares.
Espero que la cooperación pacífica entre las dos Coreas continúe, y se extenderá mucho más allá de los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno.
