This will be a year of change for Saudi Arabia

Analysis by Eulogio JP

Saudi Arabia is a nation where changes don’t seem to take place.
But in 2018, changes will be so drastic for Saudi Arabia that life won’t look the same in the Middle Eastern country by year’s end. Here are a few of the upcoming changes:

*Fuel price increases: Oil drives the Saudi Arabian economy. Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil producer, is the largest in the world; therefore, Saudi citizens have been able to purchase oil inexpensively. However, this changed on Jan. 1. Gas in the kingdom costs about $2.05 a gallon – a 127 percent increase.
*Privatization of Aramco: A small percentage of the giant oil producer will sell on the stock market, becoming the biggest stock market listing in history.
*Accessibility to entertainment: On a more exciting note, citizens will finally get to enjoy movies. After a 35-year ban on cinemas, Saudi Arabia will grant theater licenses in 2018, with the first theaters expected to open in March.
*Tourism growth: The kingdom will start granting tourist visas for the first time. Previously, visas were issued only for work and to visit the holy sites.
*Women’s rights: Without a doubt, the best changes will affect women. Salman Al-Ansari, Saudi American Public Relation Affair Committee founder and president, acknowledged this when he said, “I wouldn’t be surprised … (at) all if we see the appointment of a Saudi woman to a ministerial position.”
Before 2018, women in Saudi Arabia weren’t allowed to drive. But this ban will be lifted in June, giving women a bigger role in the economy. Only 22 percent of Saudi women are active in the workforce. With the lifting of the ban, the number is expected to reach 30 percent.
Additionally, women will be allowed to enter three stadiums in major cities. And stadiums will begin accommodating families. As a result, the old tradition of men and women being separated in public places will slowly end.
