In 2012, Latina author R.J. Palacio wrote a best-selling book.
That book has been adapted into a blockbuster film.
The movie is “Wonder.” Based on Palacio’s novel of the same name, it tackles issues of bullying, love and kindness. Starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay, the tender-hearted movie was released in late 2017 and became a people’s favorite, grossing more than $275 million worldwide at the box office. Recently, it became available in the Blue Ray, DVD and Digital Combo home video formats.
During a recent interview with Dos Mundos, Palacios discussed the story and the experience of working in Hollywood and getting the movie version of her book right.
Dos Mundos: How did you decide to write the story?
R.J. Palacio: I was with my kids, and we found ourselves in very close proximity to a little girl who had a craniofacial difference. And it just got me thinking about what it must be like to face a world that doesn’t know how to deal with things and … (prejudges) how you look. At the same time, my son had finished his first year at middle school – and I wanted to explore that time period in … (kids’ lives) when they are experimenting (with) who they are and who they want to be and what they want to be known for. It is a moment in their lives when they are becoming what they want to become. I wanted to remind kids about the value of kindness and that they navigate who they want to be. It is important to emphasize that we have to be kind.
DM: When you saw this little girl, you thought about showing kindness?
RJP: Exactly. When I saw this girl, I thought that she was a receptor of kindness, just based on the way she looked. Especially being a child and surrounded by children, I just thought it was going to be a good setting, a good idea for a book.
DM: How did they come and tell you that they wanted the book to become a movie?
RJP: When the book was going out for reviews, before it was made public, my agent started to get phone calls from producers in Hollywood who were interested in acquiring the rights. I was very cautious about who I decided to work with. When I met the producers, I thought I (had) found people that had the same idea of a movie that I had – which was to make a small, but tender-hearted movie, not a big drama.
DM: How did you feel?
RJP: It was exciting. I was cautiously excited because I didn’t want it to be a bad movie. I wanted it to be a movie that I felt proud of.
DM: Were you involved in the production process?
RJP: I was one of the executive producers, and I had some choice in the casting and I helped the screenwriter and the director to rewrite the script. And then, I went to the shooting and I got to watch … behind the scenes and give input. Overall, I was really allowed to chime in.
DM: How was it when you watched the movie?
RJP: Knowing that so many people were preserving the integrity of my book was very humbling. One thing that all had in common … (was) that they loved the book and they were there in service of the book. They wanted to bring the book to life. They were there because they believed in the book and that was an amazing feeling. I saw the movie in various stages when it was produced. Every step along the way, I was able to give my feedback. So when I saw the entire movie in a movie theater, it was an amazing thing, an incredible experience.
DM: You tackle issues such as bullying – and then, you also tackle (themes of) unity, family. How do you feel about transmitting this message?
RJP: The thing is that we live in world where bullying isn’t just among children. We are seeing something outrageous coming out of the White House – and coming out of our government and coming out of grownups that should know better. I wrote this book as a way of inspiring people to be kind, to treat each other with respect, dignity and compassion.
DM: Why do people need to watch the movie?
RJP: (It) is one of … (those) movies that is for everybody and that everyone enjoys…. Nowadays, it is hard to find a movie that has that appeal. It is a movie that will make you feel good, it is funny. It is a movie that reminds people that there is goodness out in the world and that people in general are good.
DM: Send a message to people in Kansas City:
RJP: Kansas City, I hope you enjoy the movie as much as I do. And I hope you understand that we all have a story to tell. We are all going through stuff – and “Wonder” reminds you that, together, we can do anything.

Durante una reciente entrevista con Dos Mundos, Palacios discutió la historia y la experiencia de trabajar en Hollywood y obtener la versión cinematográfica correcta de su libro.
Dos Mundos: ¿Cómo decidiste escribir la historia?
R.J. Palacio: Estaba con mis hijos y nos encontramos muy cerca de una niña que tenía una diferencia craneofacial. Lo que me hizo pensar en lo que debe ser enfrentar un mundo que no sabe cómo manejar las diferencias y … (prejuzga) cómo te ves. Al mismo tiempo, mi hijo había terminado su primer año en la escuela primaria y quería explorar ese período de tiempo en … (las vidas de los niños) cuando están experimentando quiénes son, quiénes quieren ser y por qué quieren ser conocidos por. Es un momento en sus vidas cuando se están convirtiendo en lo que quieren llegar a ser. Quería recordarles a los niños sobre el valor de la bondad y que naveguen por lo que quieren ser. Es importante enfatizar que debemos ser amables.
DM: ¿Cuando viste a esta niña, pensaste en mostrar bondad?
RJP: Exactamente. Cuando vi a esta chica, pensé que era un receptor de bondad, sólo por la forma en que se veía. Especialmente siendo una niña y rodeada de niños, pensé que sería un buen escenario, una buena idea para un libro.
DM: ¿Cómo se acercaron y te dijeron que querían que el libro se convirtiera en una película?
RJP: Cuando el libro salió a revisión, antes de que se hiciera público, mi agente comenzó a recibir llamadas telefónicas de productores en Hollywood que estaban interesados en adquirir los derechos. Fui muy cautelosa sobre con quién trabajar. Cuando conocí a los productores, pensé que había encontrado personas que tenían la misma idea de una película que yo, que era hacer una película pequeña pero tierna, no un gran drama.
DM: ¿Cómo te sentiste?
RJP: Fue emocionante. Estaba cautelosamente emocionada porque no quería que fuera una mala película. Quería que fuera una película de la que me sintiera orgullosa.
DM: ¿Estuviste involucrada en el proceso de producción?
RJP: Fui una de las productoras ejecutivas, tuve opinión en el elenco y ayudé al guionista y al director a reescribir el guión. Luego, fui al rodaje y pude ver … detrás de escena y dar retroalimentación. En general, realmente me permitieron formar parte.
DM: ¿Cómo fue cuando viste la película?
RJP: Saber que tanta gente preservaba la integridad de mi libro me dio un sentimiento de humildad. Una cosa que todos tenían en común … era que amaban el libro y estaban allí al servicio del libro. Querían darle vida. Estuvieron allí porque creyeron en el libro y fue una sensación increíble. Vi la película en varias etapas cuando se produjo. En cada paso del camino, pude dar mi opinión. Entonces, cuando vi toda la película en una sala de cine, fue algo increíble, una experiencia increíble.
DM: Aborda problemas como el acoso escolar y luego también temas de unidad y familia. ¿Cómo te sientes al transmitir este mensaje?
RJP: El hecho es que vivimos en un mundo donde el acoso escolar no sólo se da entre los niños. Estamos viendo algo escandaloso en la Casa Blanca y proviene de nuestro gobierno y de adultos que deberían tener más conciencia. Escribí este libro como una forma de inspirar a las personas a ser amables, a tratarse unos a otros con respeto, dignidad y compasión.
DM: ¿Por qué la gente necesita ver la película?
RJP: Es una de esas películas que es para todos y que todos disfrutan. Hoy en día, es difícil encontrar una película que tenga ese atractivo. Es una película que te hará sentir bien, es divertidá. Es una película que recuerda a las personas que hay bondad en el mundo y que las personas en general son buenas.
DM: Envía un mensaje a la gente de Kansas City:
RJP: Kansas City, espero que disfrutes la película tanto como yo y que entiendas que todos tenemos una historia que contar. Todos estamos pasando por cosas y “Extraordinario” te recuerda que, juntos, podemos hacer cualquier cosa.
