On Sunday night (April 22), the first presidential debate for Mexico’s July elections took place in Mexico City.
To get a sense of the mood in Mexico, Dos Mundos asked some Mexicans for their thoughts about the debate and the candidates. Here are their answers:
“I think that (Ricardo) Anaya was the most prepared candidate. His proposals were also the most logical ones. In addition, he had the right arguments to defend himself. I think that AMLO (Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador) didn’t answer anything. Instead, he was avoiding all the questions and his responses didn’t make sense. (Jose Antonio) Meade, he is a good candidate, but I think that his party is the problem. Margarita (Zavala) doesn’t know how to speak in public, and she was very repetitious when answering the questions.”

“I think that the debate had everything, starting … (with) strong attacks and … (including) some real proposals from the candidates. I found Margarita … (to be) a confused and weak candidate that wasn’t ready for the place that she took. ‘Bronco’ (Jaime Rodriguez) was only joking around, which left him looking like a fool. The last one didn’t make any real proposals. In the case of Meade, I think that he lost the opportunity to share proposals about what he … (would) do as our president. In my opinion, the most important candidates … (were) AMLO and Anaya. First, AMLO didn’t share his thoughts or answer the questions to avoid getting involved in a controversy, as he always does. Finally, I think that Anaya is the best candidate and that he was the most prepared for this debate.”

“It was a very poor debate because most of the candidates were focused on attacking … (the other candidates), instead of sharing their proposals. I think that this was a result of the turbulence around Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s controversial proposals…. Every candidate needed to share their opinions about them. Of all (the) candidates, I think that Anaya presented the best arguments – and that he is the most prepared to be president. There were some proposals (that were) out of place, like … Bronco’s … about cutting the hands of the thieves. I think that some (of the) candidates … (were) just like recorders, repeating the same message and not processing the meaning behind … (it). Deep down, I think that no one is completely capable of being our president and … (facing) our national problems.”

“The debate didn’t surprise me. There wasn’t anything new…. (It was) the 4 PRIAN (the most powerful parties in Mexico, PRI, and PAN) candidates attacking AMLO. The moderators were also against AMLO. In addition, the news after the debate attacked him. But even after everything, I think that he won the debate and that he will win the election.”

“I think … (the) candidates should … (have focused) on sharing their proposals and starting conversations by sharing their ideas. But instead, they spent two hours attacking each other with graphics and pictures revealing each other’s secrets. However, it seems like all their previous preparation for the event was focused on discovering the mistakes … (of) their rivals, instead of focusing on the country. The candidates showed their lack of maturity. I also think that Obrador was the only one that kept his composure, but (even) that was overshadowed by his arrogance.”

Street Talk: Primer debate presidencial en México
El domingo por la noche (22 de abril), el primer debate presidencial para las elecciones de julio en México tuvo lugar en la Ciudad de México.
Para tener una idea del estado de ánimo en México, Dos Mundos preguntó a algunos mexicanos por sus pensamientos sobre el debate y los candidatos. Aquí están sus respuestas:
“Creo que (Ricardo) Anaya fue el candidato más preparado. Sus propuestas también fueron las más lógicas. Además, tenía los argumentos correctos para defenderse. Creo que AMLO (Andrés Manuel López Obrador) no respondió nada. En cambio, él estaba evitando todas las preguntas y sus respuestas no tenían sentido. (José Antonio) Meade, es un buen candidato, pero creo que su partido es el problema. Margarita (Zavala) no sabe cómo hablar en público, y fue muy repetitiva al responder las preguntas “.

“Creo que el debate tuvo todo, comenzando … con fuertes ataques e … incluyendo algunas propuestas concretas por parte de los candidatos. Margarita es una candidata confusa y débil que no estaba lista para el lugar en el que estaba. ‘Bronco’ (Jaime Rodríguez) sólo bromeaba, lo que lo dejaba como un tonto. El último no hizo ninguna propuesta real. En el caso de Meade, creo que perdió la oportunidad de compartir propuestas sobre lo que … haría como nuestro presidente. En mi opinión, los candidatos más importantes … fuero AMLO y Anaya. Primero, AMLO no compartió sus pensamientos ni respondió las preguntas para evitar involucrarse en una controversia, como siempre lo hace. Finalmente, creo que Anaya es el mejor candidato y que él fue el más preparado para este debate “.

“Fue un debate muy pobre porque la mayoría de los candidatos se centraron en atacar, en lugar de compartir sus propuestas. Creo que esto fue el resultado de la turbulencia en torno a las controvertidas propuestas de Andrés Manuel López Obrador … cada candidato tuvo que comentar sobre ellas. De todos los candidatos, creo que Anaya presentó los mejores argumentos, y que él es el más preparado para ser presidente. Hubo algunas propuestas (que estaban) fuera de lugar, como … Bronco … sobre cortarle las manos a los ladrones. Creo que algunos de los candidatos … son como grabadoras, repitiendo el mismo mensaje y no procesando el significado que hay detrás. En el fondo, creo que nadie es completamente capaz de ser nuestro presidente y … enfrentar nuestros problemas nacionales “.

“El debate no me sorprendió. No hubo nada nuevo … fueron 4 candidatos del PRIAN (los partidos más poderosos de México, PRI y PAN) atacando a AMLO. Los moderadores también estaban en contra de AMLO. Además, las noticias después del debate también lo atacaron. Pero incluso después de todo, creo que ganó el debate y que ganará las elecciones “.

“Creo que … los candidatos deberían … haberse centrado en compartir sus propuestas y comenzar conversaciones compartiendo sus ideas. Pero, en cambio, pasaron dos horas atacándose unos a otros con gráficos e imágenes que revelaban los secretos de los demás. Sin embargo, parece
que toda su preparación previa para el evento se centró en descubrir los errores … de sus rivales, en lugar de centrarse en el país. Los candidatos mostraron su falta de madurez. También creo que Obrador fue el único que mantuvo la compostura, pero eso fue eclipsado por su arrogancia “.
