Confrontation in KCMO indicates horrors of everyday reality

Commentary by Eulogio JP

Something happened on June 26 in Kansas City, Mo., that might seem like something out of a horror movie. But it wasn’t.
It was another indicator of the horrors of everyday American reality.
Two Kansas City immigration attorneys were reportedly assaulted by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent so aggressively that one lawyer’s foot was broken. To make matters worse, the agent locked her in a room without phone or medical access.
As multiple news outlets have reported, lawyers Andrea Martinez and Megan Galicia were accompanying their client, a 3-year-old immigrant, to ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Office in Kansas City. The objective was to reunite the child with his mother, Kenia Bautista-Mayorga, before being deported to Honduras.
Martinez said she had arranged with ICE agents beforehand to reunite the boy and his mother in the parking lot. However, once at the prearranged location, things changed.
Instead of meeting in the parking lot, ICE commanded for the lawyer and the 3-year-old to come inside the lobby. When the doors were opened for them to walk in, Martinez and Galicia naturally followed him. But the ICE agent blocked them from going inside, according to Martinez.
“He slammed the door on us,” she said in a story for the Daily Beast. “The officer pushed us out and didn’t let us follow our 3-year-old client into the lobby, and then pushed me to the ground. I was wearing high heels, so that’s when my foot was fractured and my leg got all bloody. And then, my pants ripped. But then, he called me back in and detained me for another 40 minutes or an hour.”
A few dozen protesters in the parking lot witnessed the incident. There were video cameras taping the horrible scene, too.
Naturally, ICE had a response. Spokesperson Shawn Neudauer gave this written statement:
“We take any allegations against ICE personnel very seriously and are looking into the matter. Until a review of the documentary evidence is completed, ICE can issue no further public comment on the matter.”
Not much of a response, was it?
Andrea Martinez is a humble, giving lawyer who tirelessly fights for her clients. My wife and I used her services when I was working on obtaining my green card. Andrea and her legal team made my wife and I feel understood and comfortable throughout the process. It’s difficult to believe incidents like this are going on in our nation, particularly to someone like her.
Martinez has told multiple media outlets that she feels traumatized by the incident.
“As attorneys, we expect ourselves to be strong for our clients,” she told the press. “When you get physically battered by an ICE officer, it also takes a toll emotionally. We’ve been in shock and in tears.”
May you have a full, speedy recovery, Andrea. The immigrant community needs people like you to fight for what’s right and just. It needs people like you to fight against the horrors of everyday American reality.

No hubo mucha respuesta, ¿verdad?
