Welcome tourists! In this edition, we will talk about a magical place in our neighboring country Mexico. Cabo San Lucas, the site where the Arc of the End of the World is located or at least that is how it is known. The city was named both in honor of San Lucas Evangelista and also to its location in a cape (land mass that projects towards the interior of the sea). The first time it was documented in a paper was in 1542. The city has less than 100 thousand citizens.
The city is located at the tip of the Baja California Sur peninsula and has beautiful desert landscapes and amazing beaches. One of the things that make it a very special place is undoubtedly the “Arc of the End of the World”, a huge formation of rugged rock and that has a huge hole in the shape of an arch in which the water of the Cortes Sea (also known as the Gulf of California) and the water of the Pacific Ocean come together. Regularly a large part of the arch is underwater, but every 4 years or so there is a curious phenomenon in which enough sand accumulates to form a small beach at the foot of the arch and only lasts for a couple of weeks. Cabo San Lucas is also famous for hosting one of the most important fishing tournaments in the world, Bisbee’s Black and Blue, bringing boats from all over the world and offering 4 million dollars in prizes.
Round flights from Kansas to Cabo San Lucas have an average price of $420, with at least one stop. The best way to get around the different beaches or in the city is by car, so I advise you to rent one. But if your budget is more limited, there is a bus route that leaves from San José del Cabo (where the international airport is located) to Cabo San Lucas. The bus has a price of $5 and the route is around the tourist area, which is a road of 21 miles where you can enjoy beautiful desert landscapes and also the Sea of Cortez. There is a few stops during the trip, but some of them are on the main beaches of these 2 cities. Accommodation in this paradise has an average price of $60 per night in a 3-star hotel. The city has some of the most luxurious resorts in the world, so a room in a 5-star hotel can go from $200 to $1,000 per night. When it comes to food, you can eat for a cheap price in small restaurants by the beach. A full meal goes around $12. The most common dishes are different presentations of fish and seafood.
Some of the places you should not miss when visiting Cabo San Lucas:
Playa el Medano is undoubtedly one of the most famous and visited beaches in the area. The main reason is that besides being very close to the center of the city, the waves are quite calm which allows children and adults to relax. It offers a restroom service, a large number of restaurants and palapas for rent, and there are many options for hiring recreational activities, among which the most outstanding is snorkeling, diving, sailing, boating, sports fishing, kayaking, and water skiing. The beach is admission free, so the only price you must pay will be the activities you do and the space of umbrellas you rent.
Playa Santa María is a semi-virgin beach and without a doubt one of the most beautiful not only of the Cabos, but across Mexico. It has a distinctive Blue Flag that is a recognition given by the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches that meet the requirements of quality, safety, education, and environmental information. Mexico is the first country in America with beaches and marinas with this international recognition. As it is a very protected site, there is practically no place to rent umbrellas or restaurants to buy drinks or food, so I advise you take your own food and something to cover from the sun. Here you can enjoy a natural view above and below the water, an ideal place to snorkel and learn about the marine diversity of the Sea of Cortez. It is 17 minutes by car from the tourist area and you can also get there by bus.
Chilean beach is another of the most beautiful and preserved beaches of Cabo San Lucas, which also has the distinctive Blue Flag. And like Santa Maria has very little commerce, so you should also consider taking your food separately and something to cover yourself from the sun. It is an ideal place to snorkel and dive for the transparency and tranquility of its waters, surrounded by rocks and beautiful reefs. It is 27 minutes by car from the tourist area, only 10 minutes after Santa María.
Nightlife is also one of the strong points of the city, so if you have plans to go out and have fun at night you will find more than one place to have a great time, the most famous bars are the Squid Roe, The Giggling Marlin, and Mandala. Most tourist sites allow direct payment in dollars and the prices presented are usually based on dollars, so you do not have to worry about changing large amounts of cash to the Mexican peso.

Conoce Cabo San Lucas
Bienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de un mágico lugar de nuestro país vecino México, sitio en donde se encuentra el Arco del Fin del Mundo o al menos así se le conoce, nos referimos a Cabo San Lucas, México. La ciudad fue nombrada en honor a San Lucas Evangelista y además a que se encuentra en un cabo (masa de tierra que se proyecta hacia el interior del mar), en 1542 fue documentado en papel por primera vez este nombre; la ciudad cuenta con poco menos de 100 mil habitantes.
La ciudad se encuentra en la punta de la península de Baja California Sur, y cuenta con hermosos paisajes desérticos y con asombrosas playas. Uno de los puntos que la hacen un sitio muy especial es sin lugar a dudas el “Arco del Fin del Mundo”, una enorme formación de roca rugosa y que tiene un enorme agujero en forma de arco en el cual se mezclan las aguas del Mar de Cortés (también conocido como Golfo de California) y las aguas del Océano Pacífico. Regularmente una gran parte del arco se encuentra bajo el agua, pero cada 4 años aproximadamente se da un curioso fenómeno en el que se acumula la suficiente arena para formarse una pequeña playa a los pies del arco y que tan solo dura un par de semanas. También es muy famoso Cabo San Lucas por ser la sede de uno de los torneos de pesca más importantes del mundo, el Bisbee’s Black and Blue, trayendo embarcaciones de todo el mundo y que ofrece 4 millones de dólares en premios.
Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Cabo San Lucas tienen un costo promedio de $420, y cuentan con al menos una escala. El mejor medio para moverse por las distintas playas o dentro de la misma ciudad es en automóvil, por lo que te recomiendo rentes uno, pero si tu presupuesto es más limitado existe una ruta de camiones que sale desde San José del Cabo (ciudad en la que se encuentra el aeropuerto internacional) hasta Cabo San Lucas, tiene un costo de $5 y el recorrido es por todo el corredor turístico, una carretera de 21 millas en donde podrás disfrutar de hermosos paisajes desérticos y también del mar de Cortés, cuenta con pocas paradas durante el viaje, pero algunas de ellas son en las principales playas de estas 2 ciudades. El hospedaje en esta paradisiaca ciudad tiene un costo promedio de $60 la noche en un hotel 3 estrellas y cuenta con algunos de los resorts más lujosos del mundo por lo que una habitación en un hotel 5 estrellas puede ir desde los $200 hasta los $1,000 la noche. Si de comida se trata, puedes comer muy económico en restaurantes pequeños casi a pie de playa, una comida completa ronda los $12, los platillos más comunes son pescados y mariscos en distintas presentaciones.
Llegó el momento de describirte algunos de los sitios que no deberás perderte al visitar Cabo San Lucas:
Playa el Médano, es sin duda una de las playas más famosas y visitadas de toda la zona, su principal razón es que además de estar muy cerca del centro de la ciudad sus aguas son bastante tranquilas, el oleaje es bastante calmado lo que permite a chicos y grandes poder disfrutar de ella sin tener mucha experiencia para nadar, cuenta con servicio de baños, una basta cantidad de restaurantes y palapas para rentar, además de que hay muchas opciones para contratar actividades recreativas, entre las que más destacan el snorkel, el buceo, el veleo, navegación en lancha, pesca deportiva, paseos en kayak y el esquí acuático. La playa es de entrada libre, por lo que el único costo que deberás pagar será el de las actividades que realices y del espacio de sombrillas que rentes.
Playa Santa María, es una playa semi virgen y sin lugar a dudas una de las más hermosas no sólo de los cabos, sino de todo México, tiene distintivo Blue Flag que es un reconocimiento entregado por la Fundación Europea de Educación Ambiental (FEE) a las playas que cumplen los requisitos de calidad, seguridad, educación e información ambiental. México es el primer país en América con playas y marinas con este reconocimiento internacional. Al ser un sitio muy protegido no se cuenta prácticamente con vendedores ambulantes ni personas para rentar servicio de sombrillas o restaurantes para comprar bebidas o alimentos, por lo que te recomiendo lleves tus propios alimentos y algo con qué taparse del sol o mucho bloqueador de preferencia biodegradable. Aquí podrás disfrutar de un paisaje natural por encima y por debajo del agua, un lugar ideal para hacer snorkel y conocer la diversidad marina del mar de Cortés. Se encuentra a 17 minutos en automóvil sobre el corredor turístico y se puede llegar también en autobús.
Playa Chileno, es otra de las playas más lindas y conservadas de Cabo San Lucas, que además también cuenta con el distintivo Blue Flag y que al igual que Santa María cuenta con muy poco comercio, por lo que también deberás considerar llevar tu comida a parte y algo con que cubrirte del sol. Es un lugar ideal para hacer snorkel y buceo por la transparencia y tranquilidad de sus aguas, rodeadas por piedras y hermosos arrecifes. Se encuentra a 27 minutos en automóvil sobre el corredor turístico, sólo 10 minutos después de Santa María.
La vida nocturna también es uno de los puntos fuertes de la ciudad, por lo que si tienes planes para salir a divertirte de noche encontrarás más de un sitio en donde pasarla de maravilla, los bares más famosos son el Squid Roe, The Giggling Marlin y el Mandala. La mayoría de los sitios turísticos permiten el pago directo en dólares y los precios presentados suelen estar en base a dólares, por lo que no habrá que preocuparse por cambiar gran cantidad de efectivo al peso mexicano.
