Wonderful World: Discover Cologne

By Tom Sawyer

Welcome tourists! In this edition, we will talk about Cologne, the fourth largest city in Germany, where one of the most beautiful cathedrals on the planet is located. City founded in the year 38 B.C. and has just over 1 million citizens.
Perhaps only a few know it but the Eau de Cologne has its origins in this city. Although the perfumes already existed, this perfumed water was quite fresh so it was an innovative change to the French perfumes.
Round trips from Kansas to Cologne have an average price of $1,700 and at least 2 layovers. I advise you to travel from Kansas to Frankfurt and from there take a train with a duration of 1 hour and 10 minutes. The average price of the airplane to Frankfurt is $1,000 and another $30 for every train ride. You can save at least $500, by getting through Frankfurt. The average price in a 3-star hotel is $80 and in a 5-star it is $170 per night. As far as mobility is concerned, you should travel by subway. The subway will be helpful due to traffic and convenient as it will get you very close to all the main attractions of the city. The price per trip is $3.30, but you can buy a ticket for the whole day for $10.30 or a ticket for 5 people for $15.50. The last one will allow you and your companions to move throughout the city at a very low cost. There are some car rental companies, but it’s not advisable to drive because there is a lot of traffic during peak hours. When it comes to eating, the most typical dish is Rheinischer Sauerbraten. Which is a marinade of horse meat and is accompanied by a sweet and sour stew. You can not leave without drinking the beer of purely colonial production called Kölsch. The average price of a meal is $25 with a drink included.
Below I describe some of the places you should not miss during your trip to Cologne:
Cathedral of Colonia is a Catholic temple of Gothic style, that began its construction in the year 1248 and it was not until more than 600 years after it was finished in the year 1880. It has a height of 157 meters, which made it the tallest building in the world until 1884 when the Washington Monument was completed. It is the most visited building in Germany and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. After the Second World War, this beautiful construction was one of the few places that remained standing in the city, after being destroyed the homes of more of 45 thousand people.
Schildergasse is the main street for shopping, here you can find the most famous shops in the city. Without a doubt here is the right place, if you want to take memories of this beautiful city.
In the Documentation Center on National Socialism in Cologne you can learn more about the cruelty of war. Going down to the basement you will see the site where the Gestapo had its prison. You can learn thousands of stories that were carried out here. Discover the place where the prisoners were executed. The admission fee is $5.30.
Ludwig Museum is one of the most important museums of modern art worldwide. It exhibits a collection dating from the late twentieth century and with important artists such as René Magritte, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein. You can also find a large number of works by maestro Pablo Picasso and the work of Salvador Dalí named La Gare de Perpignan. The admission price is $14.50
Chocolate Museum, in this place you will be able to know the whole history of chocolate, from the time of the Mayan and Aztec cultures, the baroque and industrial era to the individual refinement of the noble chocolate of now. You can also have a taste of the different types of chocolates. The admission fee is $ 9.50.
Hohenzollern Bridge is the main railway bridge in the city, which also has pedestrian traffic. It will allow you to have some beautiful photographs of the cathedral in the distance, from the other side of the bridge you can have this beautiful view. Catching a sunset and/or dusk from that point is a real gem. Also from this bridge, you can enjoy the view of the River Rhine, one of the most important rivers in Europe.
Remember that the prices that we show may vary, especially in countries that do not handle the US dollar as the base currency due to currency fluctuations. Goodbye and hope you have a wonderful adventure and a good trip!

Conoce Colonia
