Huerta winning victories for Latinos through activism

By Chara

Part IV of a National Hispanic Heritage Month commemoration series

A Latina’s activism has earned her national recognition, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest award for civilians.
The activist is Dolores Huerta. Born in New Mexico, Huerta graduated from the Stockton College branch of the University of the Pacific system with a teaching degree when she realized her vocation was helping people. She went on to be a co-founder of the Stockton, California, chapter of the Community Service Organization, which focused on voter registration and helping Hispanics improve their lives.
Huerta’s activism also led her to establish the Agricultural Workers Association. Then, she joined Cesar Chavez to fight for farm workers’ rights. The two founded the National Farm Workers Association, later known as the United Farm Workers of America.
Huerta’s leadership allowed her to negotiate contracts that benefited migrant workers. She is perhaps best known for organizing the 1965 Delano grape strike in California. Thanks to her negotiation skills, grape workers saw an improvement in their working conditions.
Huerta, who received the Medal of Freedom from President Obama in 2012, continues to work as an activist. Over the past two decades, she has worked to try to get Latinos elected. She also serves as president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation.
