A migrant caravan that started marching from Honduras and Guatemala has crossed the Mexican border and keeps moving north. And the number of migrants keeps growing.
The New York Times recently stated that the number of caravan travelers had increased from 3,000 to 7,000. It is considered the largest in history.
As of this writing, the migrants were reportedly attempting to get into the United States within the next few days, causing alarm in the White House.
“In our country, there are no jobs, there is no food,” an anonymous Honduran woman said via a Facebook video of the migrants’ reasons for wanting to enter the United States. “We just want to have a job and provide … (for) our families.”
When the caravan started its journey, President Trump threatened that he would close the border between Mexico and the United States if Mexican authorities didn’t stop the Central American migrants. Mexican authorities held the caravan until chaos started to reign at the Guatemala-Mexico border. They started crossing, jumping and attacking Mexican police officers before the situation was brought under control.
Recently, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto (Peña Nieto in Spanish) addressed the issue by saying the migrants would be admitted, provided they had travel documents.
“Mexico does not allow or (will not) allow entry to its territory in an irregular manner, much less in a violent manner,” Pena Nieto said during a recent address to Mexicans. “Violent entry into the country not only threatens our sovereignty; it also puts migrants themselves at risk, especially girls, boys, women and the elderly. The secretaries of the interior and foreign affairs have been instructed to maintain (a) dialog with the caravan, in order to guarantee conditions of security and orderly migration, and respect the legal framework and (their) human rights. Mexico maintains its willingness to support migrants who decide to enter our country while respecting our laws.”
President Trump first thanked the Mexican government for holding the caravan at the border. However, once the immigrants crossed the border, he went off on his Twitter account.
“Sadly, it looks like Mexico’s police and military are unable to stop the caravan heading to the southern border of the United States,” Trump tweeted. “Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in. I have alerted (the) Border Patrol and military that this is a national emergency. Must change laws.”
Multiple media outlets have reported, however, that there are no confirmations of Middle Easterners in the caravan. Moreover, many media commentators are accusing the U.S. president of using the caravan to campaign for his party for the midterm elections.
On Twitter, Trump used the situation to accuse the Democrats of not promoting changes in immigration laws.
“Every time you see a caravan or people illegally coming, or attempting to come, into our country illegally, think of and blame the Democrats for not giving us the votes to change our pathetic immigration laws!” he tweeted. “Remember the midterms! So unfair to those who come in legally.”
Trump also requested that immigrants who seek asylum in America should request asylum in Mexico instead. He also threatened Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, saying the United States would cut off or substantially reduce the massive foreign aid routinely given to them.
In response, the Mexican government said it is not a requirement to apply for asylum in Mexico. Mexican authorities also have stated that number of asylum applications has increased by 300 percent within the past two days.

Caravana de migrantes sigue avanzando hacia Estados Unidos
Una caravana de migrantes que comenzó su viaje en Honduras y Guatemala ha cruzado la frontera mexicana y sigue moviéndose hacia el norte. Y el número de migrantes sigue creciendo.
The New York Times recientemente indicó que el número de viajeros en la caravana había aumentado de 3000 a 7000. Se considera la más grande de la historia.
Al momento de escribir este artículo, los inmigrantes estaban tratando de llegar a los Estados Unidos en los próximos días, lo que causó alarma en la Casa Blanca.
“En nuestro país, no hay trabajos, no hay comida”, dijo una mujer hondureña anónima en un video de Facebook sobre las razones de los migrantes para querer ingresar a los Estados Unidos. “Sólo queremos tener un trabajo y proveer … para nuestras familias”.
Cuando la caravana comenzó su viaje, el presidente Trump amenazó con cerrar la frontera entre México y los Estados Unidos si las autoridades mexicanas no detenían a los migrantes centroamericanos. Las autoridades mexicanas detuvieron la caravana hasta que el caos comenzó a reinar en la frontera de Guatemala y México. Comenzaron a cruzar, saltar y atacar a los policías mexicanos antes de que la situación se pusiera bajo control.
El presidente mexicano, Enrique Peña Nieto, abordó el tema diciendo que los inmigrantes serían admitidos, siempre que tuvieran documentos de viaje.
“México no permite ni permitirá la entrada a su territorio en una manera irregular, y mucho menos en una manera violenta”, Peña Nieto dijo durante un comunicado reciente a los mexicanos. “La entrada violenta en el país no sólo amenaza nuestra soberanía; también pone en riesgo a los mismos inmigrantes, especialmente a las niñas, niños, mujeres y personas mayores. Se ha dado instrucciones a las secretarías del interior y de asuntos exteriores para que mantengan el diálogo con la caravana, a fin de garantizar las condiciones de seguridad y migración ordenada, y respetar el marco legal y (sus) derechos humanos. México mantiene su voluntad de apoyar a los migrantes que deciden ingresar a nuestro país respetando nuestras leyes”.
Al principio, el presidente Trump agradeció al gobierno mexicano por detener la caravana en la frontera. Sin embargo, una vez los inmigrantes cruzaron la frontera, se desató en su cuenta de Twitter.
“Lastimosamente, parece que la policía y las fuerzas militares de México son incapaces de detener a la caravana que se dirige a la frontera del sur de los Estados Unidos”, Trump tuiteó. “Los delincuentes y desconocidos de Medio Oriente están metidos entre la multitud. He alertado a la Patrulla Fronteriza y al ejército de que se trata de una emergencia nacional. Deben cambiar las leyes”.
Varios medios de comunicación han informado, sin embargo, que no hay confirmaciones de que hayan personas del Medio Oriente en la caravana. Además, muchos comentaristas de los medios acusan al Presidente de los Estados Unidos de usar la caravana para hacer campaña por su partido para las elecciones de medio término.
En Twitter, Trump usó la situación para acusar a los demócratas de no promover cambios en las leyes de inmigración.
“Cada vez que vea una caravana o personas viniendo ilegalmente, o tratando de venir, a nuestro país ilegalmente, ¡piense en y culpe a los demócratas por no darnos los votos para cambiar nuestras patéticas leyes de inmigración!” tuiteó.
Trump también pidió que los inmigrantes que buscan asilo en los Estados Unidos soliciten asilo en México. También amenazó a Guatemala, Honduras y El Salvador, diciendo que los Estados Unidos cortarían o reducirían sustancialmente la ayuda externa masiva que se les daba habitualmente.
En respuesta, el gobierno mexicano dijo que no es un requisito solicitar asilo en México. Las autoridades mexicanas también han declarado que el número de solicitudes de asilo han aumentado en un 300 por ciento en los últimos dos días.
