With Election Day only days away, Democratic candidate Sharice Davids believes this election is an opportunity to choose people who will work with and for the community.
Davids is running against incumbent Republican Kevin Yoder and Libertarian Chris Clemmons to represent Kansas’ 3rd District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her platform includes strong support for access to healthcare for everyone.
In addition, Davids supports the expansion of Medicaid and enabling Medicare to negotiate drug prices. She also believes in access to a quality public education. For that, the continued funding of Head Start programs, and technical and trade schools is key, she said.
On whether there is a way to work across the aisle, Davids believes there is a path to bipartisanship.
“It starts with people like me who run and don’t use a divisive language. … It starts with electing people who are going to create opportunities, … who are going to put the community they represent over the party,” she said.
Speaking as a Native American woman, Davids said she knows how important diversity and equity is for a community. That same reason helped her decide to run and try to create change and match the policies with community needs.
“I realized we needed to create inclusive policies; … to include and listen to as many voices as … (we) can,” she said. “(To do that), we need more people with reflective experiences.”
Davids supports passing bipartisan immigration laws to fix the current system.
“A lot of the conversation is around the meaning of strong borders, but it can’t mean taking kids from parents,” she said.
Davids also said she does not believe the current administration’s immigration policies “align with our values.”
“It’s taking a broken system and making it even more unpredictable,” she said, meaning the Trump administration’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants.
Although this is Davids’ first time running for office, she said she has the experience and knowledge needed for the role. She believes in working closely with the community and sees this election as an opportunity to move toward having representatives who will put the community first.
“It’s time to have (someone) who represents our values and interests, who hears the community,” she said.
Election Day is on Nov. 6. Polls will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. that day across Wyandotte and Johnson counties.

Candidata cree en poner los intereses de la comunidad en primer lugar
Con el Día de las Elecciones a sólo unos días, la candidata demócrata Sharice Davids cree que esta elección es una oportunidad para elegir a personas que trabajarán con y para la comunidad.
Davids se postula contra el republicano Kevin Yoder y el libertario Chris Clemmons para representar al 3er Distrito de Kansas en la Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos. Su plataforma incluye un fuerte apoyo para el acceso a la atención médica para todos.
Además, Davids apoya la expansión de Medicaid y permitir a Medicare el negociar los precios de los medicamentos. También cree en el acceso a una educación pública de calidad. Para eso, la financiación continua de los programas de educación inicial y de las escuelas técnicas y comerciales es clave, dijo.
Sobre si hay alguna manera de trabajar sin importar el partido político, Davids cree que hay un camino hacia el bipartidismo.
“Comienza con personas como yo que se postulan y no utilizan un lenguaje divisivo. … Comienza con elegir a personas que van a crear oportunidades, … que van a poner a la comunidad que representan por encima del partido”, expresó.
Hablando como una mujer nativa americana, Davids dijo que sabe lo importante que es para una comunidad la diversidad y la equidad. La misma razón la ayudó a decidir a postularse y tratar de crear cambio y emparejar las políticas con las necesidades de la comunidad.
“Me di cuenta que necesitábamos crear políticas inclusivas; … incluyendo y escuchando a tantas voces como podamos”, dijo. “(Para hacer eso) necesitamos más personas con experiencias que reflejan a la población”.
Davids apoya aprobar leyes de inmigración bipartidistas para arreglar el sistema actual.
“Gran parte de la conversación gira en torno al significado de fronteras fuertes, pero no puede significar separar a los niños de sus padres”, explicó.
Davids también dijo que no cree que las políticas de inmigración del gobierno actual “se alinean con nuestros valores”.
“Están tomando un sistema roto y haciéndolo mucho más impredecible”, explicó, haciendo referencia al campaña contra inmigrantes indocumentados del gobierno de Trump.
Aunque es la primera vez que Davids se postula a un cargo público, dijo que tiene la experiencia y el conocimiento necesario para el puesto. Cree en trabajar de cerca con la comunidad y ve esta elección como una oportunidad de avanzar hacia tener representantes que pondrán a la comunidad en primer lugar.
“Es tiempo de tener a alguien que represente nuestros valores e intereses, que escuche a la comunidad”, indicó.
El día de las elecciones es el 6 de noviembre. Las urnas estarán abiertas desde las 7 a.m. hasta las 7 p.m. en los condados de Wyandotte y Johnson.
