El Centro co-founder and longtime Kansas City, Kansas, resident Richard Ruiz and his wife Rosie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on the weekend of Feb. 9.
The ceremony included a Feb. 9 Mass at the St. Joseph’s Chapel in San Antonio, Texas, followed by a luncheon at the Cordi-Marian Retreat Center, with more than 100 guests in attendance, including family members and friends.
Both Richard and Rosie were active in the Kansas City community. Ruiz was El Centro’s executive director for 30 years. Rosie worked for Colgate Palmolive.
The couple got married when he was 18 and she was 19. Richard credits the success of his marriage to Rosie’s support.
“I was really missing in action; I worked all day,” he said. “As one of the founders, I made every effort to grow El Centro in every way possible for a community that needed the support organization.”
To make up for that, Richard always tried to involve his family in his work.
Sandra Olivas, a family friend who attended the ceremony, said it was an honor for her to attend the marriage blessing ceremony.
“He has accomplished so many great things in his life with Rosie by his side every step of the way,” Olivas said. “My favorite part about the Mass was seeing their immediate family, including their three children, Richard Jr., Gina and Cherrie, and their daughter-in-law Kelly Ruiz, and all of their grandchildren, each participate in the ceremony in some way, including the special readings and offerings.”
Richard was happy with the turnout for the celebration.
“It was a great weekend and I was surprised to see so many members of my family and friends came to San Antonio to celebrate with us,” he said.

Richard y Rosie Ruiz celebran su 50º aniversario de bodas
Co-fundador de El Centro y residente de Kansas City, Kansas, Richard Ruiz y su esposa Rosie celebraron su 50º aniversario de bodas el fin de semana del 9 de febrero.
La ceremonia incluyó una misa el 9 de febrero en la capilla de St. Joseph en San Antonio, Texas, seguida de un almuerzo en el Centro de Retiros Cordi-Marian, con más de 100 invitados, incluidos familiares y amigos.
Tanto Richard como Rosie estaban activos en la comunidad de Kansas City. Ruiz fue el director ejecutivo de El Centro durante 30 años. Rosie trabajó para Colgate Palmolive.
La pareja se casó cuando él tenía 18 años y ella 19. Richard atribuye el éxito de su matrimonio al apoyo de Rosie.
“Realmente me ausentaba mucho; trabajaba todo el día”, dijo. “Como uno de los fundadores, hice todo lo posible para que El Centro creciera de todas las formas posibles para una comunidad que necesitaba la organización de apoyo”.
Para compensar eso, Richard siempre trató de involucrar a su familia en su trabajo.
Sandra Olivas, una amiga de la familia que asistió a la ceremonia, dijo que fue un honor para ella asistir a la ceremonia de bendición matrimonial.
“(Richard) ha logrado tantas cosas grandiosas en su vida con Rosie a su lado en cada paso del camino”, dijo Olivas. “Mi parte favorita de la misa fue ver a su familia inmediata, incluidos sus tres hijos, Richard Jr., Gina y Cherrie, y su nuera Kelly Ruiz, y todos sus nietos, cada uno participar de alguna manera en la ceremonia, incluyendo las lecturas especiales y ofrendas”.
Richard estuvo feliz con la asistencia a la celebración.
“Fue un gran fin de semana y me sorprendió ver a tantos miembros de mi familia y amigos que vinieron a San Antonio para celebrar con nosotros”, dijo.
