Report shows decline in undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.

By Chara

A new report from the Pew Research Center states that the number of undocumented immigrants living in the United States is at its lowest total in a decade.
“In 2017, there were 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S., including 4.9 million Mexicans,” the report states. “The decrease in the Mexican born was the major factor driving down the overall population of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S., which in 2017 was 1.7 million below its peak of 12.2 million in 2007.”
According to the report, the number of Mexican undocumented immigrants declined because more people left than those who arrived. However, the 2017 data shows there has been a growth in undocumented immigrants coming from Central America.
“Among the 20 birth countries with the largest number of U.S. unauthorized immigrants, there were statistically significant increases in five from 2007 to 2017,” the report states. “Reflecting the growth in unauthorized immigrants from Central America, they included the three Northern Triangle nations of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, a trend also displayed in rising apprehensions of people from those countries at the border.”
In addition, the report claims it is likely that most undocumented people in the United States have overstayed their visas and did not cross the border illegally.
In the United States, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Dakota and South Dakota have seen a growth in their respective undocumented immigrant populations, according to the report. Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon are the states with fewer undocumented immigrants.
