These are difficult times, my friends. The government has created new tools to detain and deport our community. We must remember that we all have rights. The constitution protects everyone – we have basic rights to limit the government’s actions.
A major threat is the new Expedited Removal rule. Expedited Removal allows deportation officers (ICE/CBP) to automatically deport someone without involving a judge. If the immigrant fits a certain category, they would not be eligible to fight their case in immigration court.
This rule has been in effect in the border regions for many years. Previously, it only applied to immigrants in the first two weeks of their arrival. Now, the policy will apply to immigrants in the first two YEARS they are here and throughout the entire country.
It will be very important to be able to prove you have been here for more than two years at all times. We have been distributing the cards below with a place to put the year you arrived. In addition, you should carry documents proving you have been present for many years.
Most important, you should have the information of a lawyer who knows you. Now is the time to make an appointment several lawyers so that you can decide who you trust if you are detained. Carry their information with you always so you can tell the government official that you want to call “your” lawyer.
