Cabot Westside more than just providing medical care

By Angie Baldelomar

The Samuel U. Rodgers Cabot Westside Clinic in Kansas City, Missouri’s Westside area has a long history of serving minority communities, including the Hispanic community.
During the early 1900s, as Mexican immigrants arrived in Kansas City, they started looking for jobs and settled in the Westside.
“However, they did get met with a lot of discrimination and poverty, and (they) were just lacking access to basic social services when it … (came) to health care,” Dr. Catricia Tilford, leading pediatrician at Cabot, said.
Cabot was founded in 1906, starting as a four-bed ward for impoverished children. The increasing immigrant population led to the city’s health department to ask Cabot if the facility could open a clinic.
Now, Cabot is a multilingual clinic that provides comprehensive medical care, including dental, mental health, and women, infants and children care. In addition, the clinic also has community health workers whose role is to help patients connect with outside resources to help with needs beyond medical needs.
“We’re more than just providing medical care,” Tilford said. “We care about the whole patient and we care about their family and understand that, if you don’t have basic needs, then that eventually affects your health as well.”
Tilford has worked at the clinic for more than two years. She likes working there because of the commitment to patients that goes beyond meeting their medical needs.
“I take pride in being able to work here at Cabot because it’s a very small, intimate family feeling here at this clinic,” she said. “The patients and families really value the care they’re receiving, and sometimes, it might be the only care they’ve received since migrating from their home countries.”
In response to the pandemic, the clinic also has started offering telemedicine services and pop-up, drive-thru services to safely reach out to the community, including COVID-19 testing. The clinic also is still seeing patients. Even those without insurance can be seen at Cabot.
