Cheatham wins OPKS Ward 2 seat

By Tere Siqueira

Melissa Cheatham’s campaign ended with her winning the Ward 2 seat of the Overland Park, Kansas, City Council.
“My husband loved growing up in Overland Park and we love raising our family here,” said Cheatham, a mother of two. “I’m ready to get to work to maintain our city while seeking out opportunities for continuous improvement, especially when it comes to community engagement and sustainability.”
As the Blue Valley Post and other media outlets reported, Cheatham received about 62% of the vote, compared to challenger Roger Tarbutton’s 37%, in the Nov. 2 general election. Her campaign was powered by a formidable group of donors and volunteers. More than 100 volunteers participated in her outreach efforts. In addition, Cheatham said she personally knocked on the doors of nearly 3,000 voters.
“Engaging more neighbors was one of my top priorities from the start,” Cheatham said. “So I made a point of spending time every week meeting voters at their doorsteps. I hope that having a personal connection from those doorstep conversations will help residents feel comfortable reaching out to me to share their views once I’m in office.”
A frequent volunteer in her neighborhood and at her children’s schools, Cheatham has been a member of Overland Park’s Environmental Advisory Council since 2017, where she has supported more walkable neighborhoods and has achieved energy efficiency improvements to city building codes. Her other public service experience includes a stint as a professional staff member for the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce, her campaign website states.
“We’ve got to ensure our city works for families who live here today,” she said. “We are making decisions that will make this the city where our children want to raise their families someday. The investments and choices we make today will decide the housing, amenities and jobs of tomorrow.”
