The story of many of us began the day we decided to leave our hometown to seek a different life, a better life. Over the years, we have learned to live in a different place than where we were born. We build a family, life and put down roots in communities abroad.
However, distance does not mean forgetting. Our community concentrates a great diversity of stories and traditions that reflect the regions we come from. On May 5th, the Mexican Consulate recognized the work of Rose Marie Méndez with the Ohtli award, for her tireless work in promoting Mexican culture through folkloric dance. During the recognition ceremony, Rose Marie mentioned the role that culture plays in the identity of our families, and the importance of preserving it generation after generation.
Part of the work of the Mexican Consulate is to preserve the cultural richness of Mexicans living abroad, through cultural and educational programs whose objective is to reinforce the identity and maintain the bond of Mexican families with their country of origin. The preservation of culture begins with very simple things: sitting down to talk with our family, learn a song, a dance or draw a picture.
If you have children between 6 and 14 years of age, the “Este es mi México” drawing contest, organized by the Institute for Mexicans Abroad through the network of embassies and consulates around the world, is a good opportunity to talk with them about the biodiversity of Mexico and to carry out a family activity that contributes to preserving, from the United States, our Mexican identity. Preservando nuestra identidad
La historia de muchos de nosotros comenzó el día en que decidimos dejar nuestra ciudad natal para buscar una vida diferente, una vida mejor. A lo largo de los años, hemos aprendido a vivir en un lugar diferente al lugar en que nacimos. Hacemos familia, vida y echamos raíces en las comunidades en el exterior.
No obstante, la distancia no es olvido. Nuestra comunidad concentra una gran diversidad de historias y tradiciones que reflejan nuestras regiones de origen. El pasado cinco de mayo, el Consulado de México reconoció la labor de Rose Marie Méndez con el premio Ohtli, por su incansable labor de promover la cultura mexicana a través de la danza folclórica. Durante la ceremonia de entrega, Rose Marie hizo mención sobre el papel que tiene la cultura en la identidad de nuestras familias, y la importancia de preservarla generación tras generación.
Parte de las labores del Consulado de México es preservar la riqueza cultural de los mexicanos que viven en el exterior, a través de programas culturales y educativos cuyo objetivo es reforzar la identidad y mantener el vínculo de las familias mexicanas con su país de origen. La preservación de la cultura empieza desde cosas muy simples: sentarse a platicar en familia, aprender una canción, un baile o realizar un dibujo.
Si usted tiene hijos entre 6 y 14 años de edad, el concurso de dibujo “Este es mi México”, que organiza el Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior a través de la red de embajadas y consulados en todo el mundo, es una buena oportunidad para conversar con ellos sobre la biodiversidad de México y realizar una actividad familiar que contribuya en preservar la identidad mexicana desde Estados Unidos.
