The Latino community’s devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is well-known.
This devotion is linked to the faith that fervent Catholics have in the beloved patroness of Mexico, the Americas and the Philippines because of the miracles she has granted them. One person who believes in her is Guadalupe Jimenez, who shared her story with Dos Mundos in advance of the official commemoration of the Virgin of Guadalupe on Dec. 12 – the date of her last reported apparition to Juan Diego in 1531.
Jimenez and her twin were born on a cold December afternoon in Mexico City. Within days of her birth, Jimenez developed severe health complications. She was diagnosed with a delicate case of pneumonia, and the doctor told her parents she wouldn’t survive it.
“The diagnosis was not favorable at all,” Jimenez said. “However, my mom didn’t lose hope. She was always a believer in the Virgin of Guadalupe and found the strength in her to get through this difficult situation.”
Seeing the situation her daughter was in, Jimenez’s mother asked the Virgin of Guadalupe for a miracle. Her mother promised to name her after the Virgin of Guadalupe in gratitude.
Against all odds and surprising the doctors, Jimenez’s health eventually improved. Her mother kept her promise and named her daughter in the Virgin of Guadalupe’s honor.
In addition, her mother regularly visited the village of Guadalupe, the sacred site of the religious icon, as an act of gratefulness for each additional year of life. Jimenez explained that, during her visits, her mother took all her children with her and walked the square on her knees as a symbol of devotion. The more than 1-mile walk left her knees hurting and with scars, but she did it out of her profound gratitude, Jimenez recalled.
Jimenez’s whole family continues to believe in the Virgin of Guadalupe, she said. That faith has accompanied the family through difficult moments, including the death of her mother. With that in mind, she offered a message to the patron saint on her special day.
“I live every day grateful for the miracle of you saving my life when I was a baby,” Jimenez said. “I live each day grateful, keeping your reflections and philosophies present in every action I take.”

La devoción de la comunidad latina a la Virgen de Guadalupe es bien conocida.
Esta devoción está ligada a la fe que los fervientes católicos tienen en la querida patrona de México, América y Filipinas por los milagros que les ha concedido. Jiménez y su gemelo nacieron una fría tarde de diciembre en Ciudad de México. A los pocos días de nacer, Jiménez sufrió graves complicaciones de salud. Le diagnosticaron un caso delicado de neumonía y el médico dijo a sus padres que no sobreviviría.
“El diagnóstico no era nada favorable”, dice Jiménez. «Sin embargo, mi madre no perdió la esperanza. Ella siempre fue creyente de la Virgen de Guadalupe y encontró la fuerza en ella para salir adelante de esta difícil situación.»
Al ver la situación en la que se encontraba su hija, la madre de Jiménez pidió a la Virgen de Guadalupe un milagro. Su madre prometió ponerle el nombre de la Virgen de Guadalupe en agradecimiento.
Contra todo pronóstico y sorprendiendo a los médicos, la salud de Jiménez acabó mejorando. Su madre cumplió su promesa y bautizó a su hija con el nombre de la Virgen de Guadalupe.
Además, su madre visitaba regularmente la Villa de Guadalupe, lugar sagrado del icono religioso, como acto de agradecimiento por cada año adicional de vida. Jiménez explicó que, durante sus visitas, su madre llevaba consigo a todos sus hijos y recorría la plaza de rodillas como símbolo de devoción. La caminata de más de una milla le dejaba las rodillas doloridas y con cicatrices, pero lo hacía por su profunda gratitud, recordó Jiménez.
Toda la familia de Jiménez sigue creyendo en la Virgen de Guadalupe. Esa fe ha acompañado a la familia en momentos difíciles, incluida la muerte de su madre. Con eso en mente, ofreció un mensaje a la patrona en su día especial.
“Vivo cada día agradecida por el milagro de qué salvaras mi vida cuando era un bebé», dijo Jiménez. «Vivo cada día agradecida, teniendo presentes tus reflexiones y filosofías en cada acción que emprendo.”
