An artist and educator is advocating for the implementation of mentoring programs across schools.
Margarita Friedman, a native of Mexico and co-founder of Art Garden KC, is doing so as part of a mentoring program at Garfield Elementary School in Kansas City, Missouri.
“Mentoring is very rewarding,” Friedman said.
Friedman was matched with a little girl. She meets with the girl every week. Generally, kids who are struggling are the ones who get matched with mentors.
Friedman is a firm believer that mentoring is beneficial, particularly for younger kids, to be successful in school and life.
“I think it truly is like the saying, you know, that it does take a village to raise children,” she said. “That’s why it’s so important for people to see why we need to have mentors, … so that our kids can have better opportunities in life, (and) an emotional support outside of home.”
Friedman remembers how her parents always made sure to give her and her siblings the best education they could, enrolling them in the best schools and always expecting excellent grades in return. She credits the education she received as the catalyst to survive as an immigrant.
“It gave me a confidence in which it didn’t matter if I was brown or an immigrant – I knew I could survive more than any racist here,” Friedman said. “I’m more resourceful than they are.”
For Friedman, education provides immigrants with resources to succeed anywhere in the world. In that sense, mentoring plays an important role for kids from underserved communities, so it’s especially important for kids to learn how to ask for help, according to Friedman.
“Mentoring is making sure the kid knows he has someone to talk about, someone they can trust who is there for him or her,” she said.
The key to a kid’s success is the support the kid gets from everyone around them, Friedman said.
“When there’s support that comes from school, professors and the community, kids thrive,” she said.

A Friedman le asignaron una niña. Se reúne con la niña todas las semanas. En general, los niños que tienen dificultades son los que reciben mentores.
Friedman cree firmemente que la tutoría es beneficiosa, especialmente para los niños más pequeños, para tener éxito en la escuela y en la vida.
“Creo que realmente es como el dicho, que se necesita un pueblo para criar niños”, dijo. “Por eso es tan importante que la gente vea por qué necesitamos tener mentores… para que nuestros hijos puedan tener mejores oportunidades en la vida, (y) un apoyo emocional fuera del hogar”.
Friedman recuerda cómo sus padres siempre se aseguraron de brindarles a ella y a sus hermanos la mejor educación posible, inscribiéndolos en las mejores escuelas y esperando siempre excelentes calificaciones a cambio. Ella acredita la educación que recibió como el catalizador para sobrevivir como inmigrante.
“Me dio la confianza de que no importaba si era morena o inmigrante, sabía que podía sobrevivir más que cualquier racista aquí”, dijo Friedman. “Tengo más recursos que ellos”.
Para Friedman, la educación le da a los inmigrantes recursos para tener éxito en cualquier parte del mundo. En ese sentido, la tutoría juega un papel importante para los niños de comunidades desatendidas, por lo que es especialmente importante que los niños aprendan a pedir ayuda.
“La tutoría es asegurarse de que el niño sepa que tiene a alguien con quien hablar, alguien en quien puede confiar que está ahí para él o ella”, dijo.
La clave del éxito de un niño es el apoyo que recibe de todos los que lo rodean, dijo Friedman.
“Cuando hay apoyo que proviene de la escuela, los profesores y la comunidad, los niños prosperan”, dijo.
