On Monday (Feb. 6), a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and neighboring Syria, killing more than 2,500 people, injuring thousands more and leaving residents trapped inside the rubble from thousands of toppled buildings, multiple media outlets reported.
Rescue workers are searching for victims. The death toll is expected to rise.
The earthquake hit right before dawn and was centered in the town of Pazarcik in southwestern Turkey. Hours after the earthquake, a 7.5-magnitude quake struck more than 60 miles away from the epicenter.
At press time, both Turkey and Syria were in a state of emergency. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a state of mourning on Twitter.
“Due to the earthquakes that took place in our country on February 6, 2023, a national mourning period was declared for seven days,” he tweeted. “Our flag will fly at half-mast until sunset on Sunday, February 12, 2023, all over our country and within the foreign representations.”
On Monday, U.S. President Joe Biden tweeted his condolences and pledged to provide assistance.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake in Turkiye and Syria,” he stated. “I have directed my team to continue to closely monitor the situation in coordination with Turkiye and provide any and all needed assistance.”
The earthquake was reportedly one of the strongest to strike the area in more than a century.
Terremoto en Turquía y Siria deja más de 2500 muertos
Un terremoto de magnitud 7,8 sacudió Turquía y la vecina Siria el lunes (6 de febrero), matando a más de 2500 personas, hiriendo a miles más y dejando a los residentes atrapados entre los escombros de miles de edificios derribados, reportaron varios medios de comunicación.
Los equipos de rescate están buscando víctimas. Se espera que aumente el número de muertos.
El terremoto se produjo justo antes del amanecer y tuvo su epicentro en la ciudad de Pazarcik, en el suroeste de Turquía. Horas después del terremoto, un sismo de magnitud 7,5 golpeó a más de 60 millas de distancia del epicentro.
Al cierre de esta edición, tanto Turquía como Siria se encontraban en estado de emergencia. El presidente turco, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, anunció el estado de luto en Twitter.
“Debido a los sismos ocurridos en nuestro país el 6 de febrero de 2023, se declaró duelo nacional por siete días”, tuiteó. “Nuestra bandera ondeará a media asta hasta el atardecer del domingo 12 de febrero de 2023, en todo nuestro país y dentro de las representaciones en el exterior”.
El lunes, el presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, tuiteó sus condolencias y se comprometió a brindar asistencia.
“Estoy profundamente entristecido por la pérdida de vidas y la devastación causada por el terremoto en Turkiye y Siria”, afirmó. “He ordenado a mi equipo que continúe monitoreando de cerca la situación en coordinación con Turquía y brinde toda la asistencia necesaria”.
El terremoto fue uno de los más fuertes que azotó el área en más de un siglo.
